Oudwoude: Garden, Church and Historic Farmsteads
Accommodation in Oudwoude
Oudwoude brings together tangible architectural history, garden visits and walking routes. Alongside the 15th-century Hervormde Kerk, you’ll find Artuin’s garden with a farmhouse dating from 1763, as well as several historic buildings on Foarwei. Seasonal flowering and the choice between a route through the village and one passing through several places are also relevant when planning your visit.
Artuin’s garden and its flowering seasons
Visits to Artuin’s garden and studio are welcome by appointment or on a spontaneous basis. The garden surrounds a distinctive kop-hals-romp farmhouse dating from 1763, linking your visit to a specific historic building type. Flowering follows a clear sequence: bulbs bloom in April, fruit trees in May, and roses are in full bloom in June. Weather can affect when flowers bloom, so these months are a seasonal guide, not a guarantee of a specific flowering date. The three successive phases can help you choose when to visit: depending on whether you want to see bulbs, fruit blossoms or roses, the right month falls between April and June.
Church and historic buildings
The Hervormde Kerk Oudwoude is a 15th-century church with a small bell tower. It adds an older church building to the village’s architectural history; other recorded construction and design details date from the 19th century to around 1900.
The parsonage at Foarwei 38 was built in 1806. Its entrance, with features of restrained Art Nouveau, dates from 1906. The construction date and entrance thus give the same building two distinct points of reference in time. The association building at Foarwei 42 was built around 1900 as a service building for the Reformed Church of Oudwoude. It is therefore not another farmhouse, but a building that served the church. By contrast, Foarwei 48 is a kop-hals-romp farmhouse with sash windows and shutters. Taken together, these details show different building types and features, without implying that they all date from the same period.
See Allemastate from the road
Allemastate stands on slightly elevated ground that was originally surrounded by a double moat. The estate is not open to the public; an old farmhouse can be seen from the road. Plan your visit around the view from the road, and do not expect access to the grounds.
Walking routes with different itineraries
The Swalk-rûtes include a walking route through Oudwoude and the surrounding area. The Buitenpost–Oudwoude–Kollum circular walk follows a different route: it passes the church in Oudwoude and then continues along green rural paths to Kollum. You can distinguish the routes by their geographical focus: the Swalk route centres on Oudwoude and its surroundings, while the circular walk lists a sequence of places and continues from the church towards Kollum. Route conditions for the circular walk may change; check them before setting off.
