Oude Bildtzijl brings together cultural history and routes through the village and surrounding countryside. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of interests: insights into the area’s origins, historic buildings, and walks on foot. Each place and route offers its own starting point for a visit.

Cultural History and Buildings

Aerden Plaats is a visitor center in the heart of Oude Bildtzijl. Its archaeological center provides information about the origins of the area. Aerden Plaats also hosts a changing group exhibition by artists from the region. This brings archaeological context and regional art together as two distinct themes.

The Julianakerk can also be placed in its historical context: it was built in 1806 and extended in 1860. The church is part of the Bildtse Kerkenroute and Friese Tsjerkepaad. Its building history and these two route connections offer different ways to include the building in a cultural visit.

The sluis van Ouwe Syl is the natural focal point of Oude Bildtzijl. The wooden lock was built in 1507 as part of a large-scale land-reclamation project. Its history points to the reclamation of land; it also serves a purpose for navigation: boats can use the lock to reach the Wadden Sea and then return inland.

Walks and the Sea-Dike Landscape

The Dorpswandeling Ouwe Syl starts at TOP Oudebildtzijl and passes through Oude Bildtzijl’s protected village setting. This preserves the atmosphere of bygone times. The fully restored Pyp is in the center of Oude Bildtzijl and can be admired as part of the village walk. The protected village setting and the Pyp offer two distinct glimpses into the history of the place.

Another option is the route Oudebildtzijl | Rondjes om de kerken. It is 12.4 kilometers long, also starts at TOP Oudebildtzijl, and passes through Nieuwe Bildtzijl toward the Noard Fryslân Bûtendyks nature area. If you are looking for a route with a specified distance, this offers a different planning option from the village walk through the protected village setting.

South of Oude Bildtzijl, you can walk into the arable fields. West of the village runs the 14-kilometer-long Oudebildtdijk. Characteristic dike houses and winkelhaakboerderijen stand along this dike. So, in addition to the fields, a walk also takes in the distinctive buildings along the dike as part of the landscape.

Noard-Fryslân Bûtendyks is nearby. Outside the breeding season, you can move freely through the area. If you plan to visit, check the current seasonal access rules beforehand.

Regional Experiences Along the Way

The Dorpswandeling Ouwe Syl passes D’Ouwe Sylster Schapenmelkerij en Kaasboerderij van Familie Elgersma. Visitors can use a milk dispenser there and buy cheese and dairy products. Combining the walk with the farm’s offerings adds a practical insight into regional produce alongside the historic stops.

Voedselbos Ouwe-Syl offers another perspective: it is a food forest where people of all ages can meet and work together. Along with the routes, visitor center, and historic buildings, it offers a range of different themes to shape your trip to Oude Bildtzijl around.
