Harlingen: Harbor, Wadden Sea and History
Accommodation in Harlingen
In Harlingen, the size of the beach changes with the ebb and flow of the tide. Friesland’s only seaport city lies right on the Wadden Sea; on the beach, you can go for a walk, relax on the sand or cool off in the water. Broken Jug also reflects the changing tides: the lighting of this monumental work of art by Frank Stella changes with the tides of the Wadden Sea.
Harbor trips and maritime history
Harlingen’s Bruine Vloot comprises more than 70 historic seagoing vessels that berth in the outer and inner harbors. You can sail along on historic ships across the Wadden Sea or IJsselmeer. The historic lifeboat C.A. den Tex offers a different perspective: its trips take you across the Wadden Sea, through Harlingen harbor and/or to one of the Wadden Islands. Check the sailing dates before your trip.
Visitors can take a peaceful, sustainable trip through the harbor on the Jonge Seun solar ferry, passing the industrial heritage along the quays. Harlingen is also a departure point for boats to Vlieland and Terschelling; checking the timetable can help you plan your trip. The experiences differ in focus: a trip on the Bruine Vloot centers on sailing historic ships, while the solar ferry takes in the harbor and its quays.
City history and Hannemahuis
The Rijksmonument De Stenen Man was erected on the Westerzeedijk in 1576. It commemorates the All Saints’ Flood of 1570 and was described as a memorial column in honor of De Robles. The Hannemahuis is dedicated to the history and art of Harlingen, as well as changing exhibitions on historical subjects and contemporary visual art. The museum is partly housed in an elegant 18th-century merchant’s house; the oldest parts of the front house date from around 1545.
Things to see at the Hannemahuis include a distillery dating from 1760 and exhibits on the Admiralty of Friesland. A miniature house at a scale of 1:4 features interiors of homes around the Zuiderzee from 1650 to 1900. The house also has a garden with a copper beech, flowering stinzen plants in spring, and sculptures by contemporary artists during the summer months. The Hannemahuis combines a museum and the municipal archives of Harlingen. Those interested can consult archival materials in the reading room of the municipal archives at the Hannemahuis, Voorstraat 56; advance arrangements are recommended for research visits.
Craftsmanship and contemporary culture
The Harlinger Aardewerk- en Tegelfabriek makes ceramics and tiles using the traditional tin-glazing technique, which has been used in Harlingen since 1598. At the shop, you can get a close-up look at the craft and browse the range. Factory tours are available by appointment for groups of ten or more. At Nieuwe Willemshaven, DOK 5 brings together art, culture and education. The cultural venue is free to visit and consists of 14 containers, which house changing exhibition spaces.
Archaeology in Wijnaldum
The Archeologisch Steunpunt Wijnaldum presents finds from Wijnaldum and the surrounding area. A richly decorated gold brooch dating from around 650 AD is a particular highlight. Activities are held regularly, including walks to the terp where the brooch was found. You can also take an approximately six-kilometer Terpenkuier from Wijnaldum using an app. If you plan to take this walk, check the latest app details in advance.
Getting around on foot and by bike
Themed city walks in Harlingen take about 1.5 to 2 hours and are approximately five kilometers long. The Infopanelenroute offers another way to explore: it leads through the city to 13 information boards at places of significance to Harlingen. This lets you combine a walk with information about different stops around the city.
For a cycling trip, the LF Coastal Route from Harlingen to Holwerd starts in Harlingen and runs along the Frisian North Sea coast, with the Wadden Sea close by. If you also want to visit Wijnaldum, check the routes from your specific accommodation to the places you plan to visit.
