Hogebeintum reveals itself through an unusually high terp and the traces connected with it. The Hegebeintum terp reaches 8.80 metres above NAP and is the highest terp in the Netherlands. Its height gives the history of the landscape a tangible scale. Over generations, coastal residents carried clay, manure and household waste to the site and used them to build up the terp. Its formation is evident not only in the height of the terrain, but also in the materials used.

Archaeology and traces of excavation

The Archaeological Centre in Hegebeintum is the oldest of the eleven archaeological centres in Fryslân. Its permanent exhibition explores the terp landscape of Fryslân and terps. One exhibit offers a different perspective: a 12-metre-long core sample occupies the entire back wall of the information centre. As a soil sample, it makes the earth itself the subject, while the exhibition as a whole focuses on the terp landscape. On the northeastern side of the terp, you can see a realistic reconstruction of the excavation process, including iron tip wagons on rails used to transport terp soil away. Alongside the raised terp, this also highlights the excavation and removal of its soil.

Church collection and garden culture

The Protestantse Kerk Hegebeintum houses one of the richest collections of mourning boards in the Netherlands. The earliest records of Harsta State date back to 1511. The garden of Harsta State is known for its stinzen flora. This broadens the range of topics from terp archaeology to church collections and garden culture.

Historic rooms and a route to a modern terp

Since 2023, the Stichting Terp Hegebeintum has been responsible for opening the 18th-century hall and corridor to the public. If you plan to include this area in your visit, check in advance what visiting options are available.

The Hegebeintum–Blije–Terp fan de Takomst route offers a different perspective. It leads from Hegebeintum via a salt-marsh path to the Terp fan de Takomst, a modern terp completed in 2022. The route thus leads to a contemporary example of the terp form. Along the route, the path to the terp is closed during the bird breeding season, from 15 March to 15 July. Check the route information before setting out, as conditions may change.
