Wierum combines churches and fishing history with a tidal landscape right beside the sea dike. For planning your trip, the historic sites in the village and the tour to Engelsmanplaat are particularly notable highlights.

Wierum’s terp and village history

Wierum was founded in the early Middle Ages on a broad terp built on a ridge of higher ground at the edge of a salt marsh. The village lies right beside the sea dike. The terp, ridge of higher ground and salt marsh therefore shape the historic and natural setting in which you can discover Wierum.

Churches, organ and fishing history

The Mariakerk stands on Wierum’s terp and was built in 1200. The Eben-Haëzer Church in the village was built in 1875 for Protestant services. It is home to the Ypma organ, built around 1835 in Bolsward by organ builder Ypma and installed in the church in 1910. To understand the timeline, the organ’s construction and installation should be distinguished: Bolsward and around 1835 refer to when the instrument was made, while Wierum and 1910 refer to its later installation.

The Museumkerk Eben-Haëzer programme for summer and autumn 2026 includes art exhibitions, musical performances and open days. As the programme may change, check the latest dates before your visit.

Fishing is also part of the village’s history. The 1893 storm sank almost the entire Wierum fishing fleet along with its crews, marking the beginning of the end of fishing in the village. Beside the Mariakerk stands the bronze monument “De Wjirmdolster” (“The Worm Digger”). It commemorates the women of Wierum who dug worms in the mudflats to use as fishing bait.

Cultural route and mudflat hike

Wierum is one of the villages along the Waddentour, a cultural and historic tourist route. Signs along the walking trail through Wierum each display a unique four-digit code. The codes provide information and photos about historic buildings or places. This lets you combine a walk through the village with insights into individual historic sites.

Wierum is also a starting point for mudflat hikes to Engelsmanplaat. The tour starts in a car park on the Wierumerwei between the villages of Nes and Wierum. Along the way, the route passes through mud and a channel, crosses a raised sand ridge and reaches an oyster bed; on the way back, it returns through the channel. Check the latest dates and starting details in advance, as the tour arrangements may change.

At low tide, the “Cliffs of Wierum”, features in the mud and old wooden posts are visible on the mudflats near Wierum. These features add another perspective on the tidal landscape to the tour stops described above, one that is specifically dependent on low water levels.

The two routes offer different highlights: the Waddentour focuses on cultural and historic sites in the village, while the tour to Engelsmanplaat centres on the tidal landscape, with mud, a channel and a sand ridge. This makes it easy to choose between exploring local history and going on a mudflat hike.
