Mirns offers nature, cycling and cultural attractions that you can weigh differently when planning a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Mirns, it helps to first consider whether birdwatching, a bike ride, activities at the Klif or historic sites will shape your stay. De Mok and Mokkebank represent the landscape and birdlife, while the bell tower tells a specific story of remembrance.

Birdwatching, Coastal Landscape and Cycling Route

The De Mok birdwatching hide is located on Wieldyk in Mirns and is accessible year-round. Another access point is via the old sea dike between Laaxum and Mirns. Mokkebank itself is not freely accessible; however, you can enjoy a lovely view of the area from Wieldyk. The options are therefore different: you can visit the hide or view the landscape from Wieldyk.

The IJsselmeerkust cycling route continues along the sea dike to Mirns. At a junction in Mirns, the route turns onto Wieldyk to visit the De Mok birdwatching hide. If you plan to cycle this section, check the route before setting out, as route conditions can change.

Mokkebank on the IJsselmeer coast below Mirns was originally a large sandbank. After the Afsluitdijk was built, it became overgrown with reeds, shrubs and trees. An assessment published on 25 June 2026 describes how, following habitat restoration, Mokkebank has developed into an attractive habitat for characteristic marsh birds. It is based on initial observations after the restoration.

The Mirnserklif wind motor is also part of the area’s landscape history: it drains the summer polder of the De Mokkebank nature reserve directly into the IJsselmeer. Thus, along this stretch of coast, habitat development and a specific water-management function exist side by side.

Activities at Mirnser Klif

Mirnserklif is visited by kitesurfers, sport kite flyers and beachgoers. There is also a horse tie-up point at Mirnser Klif where you can stop for a rest during a ride. Paviljoen ’t Mar is located on the klif at Mirns and offers a view across the IJsselmeer. An E-chopper tour also starts at the pavilion; if you plan to take one, check current booking options with the provider.

Memorial Sites and Culture

The bell tower in Mirns is a historic wooden landmark. It contains a bell and a bronze commemorative plaque. The monument commemorates the emergency landing of an American bomber on 22 December 1943 and the deaths of seven crew members. The precisely dated event gives the bell tower a specific connection to the history of the Second World War.

At the start of the IJsbaankeunstrûte in Mirns, visitors can admire an artwork inspired by this landscape and listen to a poem inspired by this place. The artwork and poem appeal to different senses and both are connected to the landscape or the location.
