Sibrandahûs combines sacred architectural history with routes whose names and courses reveal links to monasteries. Cultural themes include architectural details, the historical connection to Klaarkamp Abbey, as well as concerts and possible day exhibitions. For routes, you can choose from several walks and a culinary cycling route. This lets you plan your stay according to your interest in architectural history, route length, or a particular activity.

Church Architecture, Furnishings and Music

The Tsjerke fan Sibrandahûs originally belonged to Klaarkamp Abbey. Its richly decorated window surrounds and the well-preserved tracery in one window are notable features. These two details give the architecture distinct accents: the ornamentation of the surrounds and the preserved tracery in a single window.

The choir of the Kloosterkapel Sibrandahûs contains the crypt of the Tjaarda van Starkenborch family. A 1957 cabinet organ by Van Vulpen stands next to the pulpit. This identifies both the location of the crypt and the instrument’s position, maker and year.

A concert is held in the Kloosterkapel Sibrandahûs once a month on Sunday afternoons. The programme ranges from classical music to rock; day exhibitions may also be held during the concerts. Check the concert dates in advance if you would like to plan your stay around one.

Walking Routes by Distance and Monastery Connections

The “Goddeloze Singel - Sijbrandahuis” walking route is 10.3 kilometres long. The Goddeloze Singel is part of a centuries-old monastery path dating from 1453. Another named walk is the 16.5-kilometre “Sibrandahûs – Claercamp – Burdaard – Rinsumageast” route. It starts at the monastery church in Sibrandahûs, built around 1300. The two routes differ in length by 6.2 kilometres; the longer route starts at this historic building.

The Kloosterkapel Sibrandahûs is on a circular route of the Klooster Claercamppad and a circular route of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad. Another route description concerns “Rondjes om de kerken”: on the return leg, the walk follows a cycle path along the Klaarkampster Mar. These details offer different route connections to consider if you would like to include churches and monastery history in your walk.

A Longer Cycling Route and Regional History

“Rondje culinair Dokkum” is a 55-kilometre cycling route. The culinary route crosses the fertile Wadden soils north of Dokkum and passes through ancient villages on its way to Sybrandahûs. It differs from the walks mentioned above both in activity and in distance.

The former Klaarkamp Abbey also has a place in history: in the late Middle Ages, it stood west of Dokkum between present-day Rinsumageast and Sibrandahûs. Several objects recalling Claercamp Monastery are on display at Museum Dokkum. The history of the monastery is thus reflected both in a historical location and in objects at the museum.
