Akkrum offers plenty to explore during a stay, with waterways, art in the historic centre and local history. If you’re looking for hotels in Akkrum, you can plan your trip around whether you’re particularly interested in a boat trip, an art walk or the town’s cultural history.

Waterways and routes through the countryside

The Akkrum-Nes SUP and canoe route starts in Akkrum and is about 6.5 kilometres long. Seasonal equipment availability may vary. The route is also suitable for an electric sloop. Most of it follows a waterway navigable by boats with a draught of up to 1.7 metres. As the waterway classification may change, check the navigation conditions before setting off.

The Slach troch Akkrum art walking route offers a different perspective: this 4.8-kilometre route passes through the historic centre. The main difference between the two routes is therefore how you travel and what they focus on—paddling or travelling by sloop on the one hand, and art and a walk through the town centre on the other.

Cycling and walking routes from Akkrum also lead through the Frisian countryside. De Alde Feanen National Park is also accessible from Akkrum. These options complement the activities on the water with other ways to explore the landscape during your trip.

Art, architecture and memorial heritage

A monument to the giants Kromme Knilles and Manke Meine stands along Akkrum’s waterfront promenade. Another monument offers a different perspective: the Akkrum war memorial is an abstract steel sculpture depicting a broken swastika. It symbolises liberation from the occupier and commemorates all fellow citizens who lost their lives in acts of war during the occupation.

The Terptsjerke also offers specific details about its architectural and decorative history. Its stained-glass windows were made by the Gonggrijp brothers from Sneek, and the church also has a 17th-century enclosed pew for the gentry. The local heritage foundation describes the Regentenkamer at Coopersburg as having been preserved in its original state.

The Mellemolen at Het Deel is a polder mill in Akkrum of the Spinnekop type, recognised as a Rijksmonument. Together with the church and the Regentenkamer, it broadens the picture of the area’s heritage, from church furnishings and historic interiors to a protected type of mill.

Events and the history of the waterways

Reuzedei is an annual event held on the Friday and Saturday after Ascension Day. If you’d like to time your trip to coincide with it, check the dates for that year’s programme. The Turfroute passes through Akkrum. In the 16th century, waterways were created in Southeast Friesland for peat skippers to transport cargo westward. This places an annual event alongside the historical importance of water transport as a separate topic.

For tourist information, the TIP Akkrum information centre is located near Jachthaven Drijfveer and Hotel Goerres, where local residents offer visitors information in person. Check its location and whether in-person advice is available before your trip.
