Zeewolde: Horsterwold, Water and Art
Accommodation in Zeewolde
Forest and trails in Horsterwold
West and south of Zeewolde lies the Horsterwold nature area, in the municipality of Zeewolde. It covers more than 3,700 hectares. The area is accessible year-round from sunrise to sunset via its roads and trails. As access rules may vary from one area to another, follow the signs at the entrances.
The 900-hectare Stille Kern is considered the quietest place in Horsterwold. Here, you are free to wander through nature away from the trails; follow the local access and grazing guidelines. For a specific outing, take the 5.5-kilometre Stille Kern Route: it leads to and around a large natural body of water. The route also offers the chance to spot fallow deer, Konik horses, white-tailed eagles or foxes. You can choose between a marked route with a body of water as a landmark and wandering freely through Stille Kern.
Wolderwijd, Tulpeiland and beaches
Tulpeiland is a tulip-shaped peninsula in Wolderwijd, off the coast of Zeewolde. It offers opportunities for tourism and water sports. A 200-metre-long dam connects the peninsula to the mainland; the cup of Tulpeiland has 80 berths. The De Spieghel lock connects this part of Wolderwijd with the De Diamant waterway.
Woldstrand has a children’s beach, a youth beach, a surfing beach and a dog beach. A beach promenade connects the beaches. Woldstrand also has sanitary facilities and a large car park. The Atol is also on Wolderwijd: a designated swimming area with a deepened section for diving.
Erkemederstrand includes a 1.5-kilometre off-leash dog beach and a 5-kilometre dike that continues as far as Zeewolde as another off-leash area. Dogs can run, swim and play on the beach at Erkemederstrand. Erkemeder Dog Beach is open year-round; check the local beach rules before setting out.
Cycling, art and other experiences
The Doortraproute Zeewolde runs along quiet, wide cycle paths through the harbour area, the village, extensive forests and past beaches. For a different way to ride, try the pump track in the green space between Kwartiermakerslaan and Gelderseweg. It is designed for bicycles, skateboards, scooters and skates.
Sea Level, a work by Richard Serra from 1996, consists of two concrete walls, each 200 metres long. Walking alongside them gives the impression of walking underwater and then resurfacing. The way you experience the artwork changes as you move along the two walls.
In Zeewolde, Hans & Grietje combines a pancake house with a play park. It includes a real candy house, a haunted house with climbing adventures and slides, and a large go-kart track. Alongside nature, water, cycle paths and art, a play park and pancake house are further options for a day out.
