Vledder brings together museums, local history and walking paths. Its cultural offerings range from contemporary glass art and explanations of art forgery to the Miramar Zeemuseum. There are also historic sites and paths through the countryside. If you are considering Vledder as a destination for a hotel stay, you can compare these different highlights to decide which themes will shape your trip.

Museums with different areas of focus

The Museum Valse Kunst is housed in the former town hall on the Brink. During a visit, you can learn about the techniques, materials and tricks used by art forgers. The collection of contemporary glass art is another area of focus. It consists mainly of European works created after 1945, particularly from the Netherlands, France, Italy, Poland and the Scandinavian countries. Explanations of art forgery and a glass art collection with a defined time period and geographic scope are presented side by side here.

The Miramar Zeemuseum has been located in Vledder since 1965. For children, it offers a treasure hunt through the museum, shell crafts, a children's corner and a whale trail in the museum garden. This sets it apart from the Museum Valse Kunst: at Miramar, activities specifically for children complement the maritime museum. If you are travelling with children, you can take these specific offerings into account when choosing cultural stops.

Village greens, market history and monuments

The Grote Brink is one of Vledder's two village greens lined with oak trees. It was formerly called Vreedebrink and was the site of annual fairs where horses, cows and sheep were traded. The last annual fair in Vledder took place in 1922. The Grote Brink is also home to a 17-tonne glacial erratic dating from 1903. It was placed there in 1945 as a war memorial to the victims of the Second World War. The market history and the memorial thus represent different chapters of local history.

The striking sculpture “Boodschapper met Boerstokkie” by Bert Kiewiet has stood at the Wierplas since 1993. It depicts an earlier village tradition: a Boerstok bearing a message was passed along by the Boermarke like a relay baton. Unlike the glacial erratic, which was erected as a war memorial, the sculpture recalls a way of conveying messages. Another archaeological point of interest lies between Vledder and Doldersum: Koelingsveld is home to one of the largest urnfields in northwestern Europe, with burial mounds dating from the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Walks and cycling trips

The Vledderhof estate lies north of Vledder. Avenues and walking paths wind through varied woodland and grassland with several ponds and small bog pools. The local walking routes, by contrast, start in the village centre, connect the countryside around the village with local culture, and follow old, restored footpaths. The routes described therefore differ in focus: the estate features woodland, grassland and bodies of water in its landscape, while the walks starting in the village centre connect the countryside and culture.

The “Museum route” cycle route passes through Vledder, connecting the Miramar Zeemuseum and the Museum Valse Kunst with the OERmuseum in Diever and Museum De Proefkolonie in Frederiksoord. Check the current route download before setting off. For bus planning: Qbuzz route 20 serves the Brink stop in Vledder and runs from Steenwijk via Dieverbrug to Assen. As timetables can change, it is advisable to check the current timetable.
