Tynaarlo offers several points to consider when planning your trip: brinks and old farmhouses shape the village’s appearance, while Hunebed D6 connects the area with more than 5,000 years of history. Two named walking routes differ in length. This gives you a way to weigh village history, culture and walks against each other when choosing where to stay.

Brinks and village history

At the intersection of Smeerveenweg and Schoolstraat is a large, triangular brink (village green). Old oaks and younger lime trees grow there. Another large meadow brink is located in the area of Schoolstraat, Eisenbroeken and Scheperweg; several old farmhouses stand along the brink and Dorpsstraat.

The two brinks differ in shape: one area has old oaks and younger lime trees, while the other is a large meadow brink. Together with the farmhouses, they offer specific points of reference for a glimpse into the village’s history. At Dorpsstraat 53, there is also a small bus shelter, one of the few surviving examples of street furniture from Drenthe’s post-war reconstruction period. This adds an element from that era to the village greens and farmhouses.

Hunebed D6 and the Drentsche Aa

The large stones of Hunebed D6 still stand and lie in the places where they were set more than 5,000 years ago. Their position is a tangible historical feature of the monument and gives your visit a sense of a time far beyond the more recent history of the village.

East of Tynaarlo flow the Zeegserloopje and the Westerdiep. Both are part of the Nationaal beek- en esdorpenlandschap Drentsche Aa landscape. The Westerdiep is also part of the Tynaarlo–Wedbroeken walking route, which follows its winding course. This means you will encounter the waterway’s name both in the context of the landscape and as part of a specific walk.

Walking by route length

The Tynaarlo–Wedbroeken walking route is 6 km long. It follows the winding Westerdiep and old, equally winding sandy paths. Surface conditions may vary seasonally. Take this into account when planning and check the route information before setting out.

“De tien van Tynaarlo: Hart van Tynaarlo” is 11 km long. This walk is therefore 5 km longer than the route to Wedbroeken. If you choose your walk by distance, the comparison is straightforward: 6 km versus 11 km. The 6-km route also offers specific information about its course along the Westerdiep and over the old sandy paths.

Visitor information

At the intersection of Hunebedstraat and the Zeegserloopje, between Tynaarlo and Zeegse, there are separate bridges for cyclists and pedestrians and for motorized traffic. The division by traffic type is a specific feature of this crossing.

Toegangspoort Wedbroeken is the northern gateway to Nationaal Park Drentsche Aa. It has parking and an information point, as well as play facilities for children. Check the condition of the facilities before setting out; if you are factoring the play facilities into your plans, confirm their availability in advance.

Hunebed D6 is relatively difficult to reach by car. Bear this in mind in advance if you are traveling by car.
