Ruinerwold offers several different points of interest for a stay. The De Karstenhoeve Museum Farm represents farm history and houses an extensive collection; two landscape storytelling routes explain the local strip-field landscape. Other attractions include the 45-kilometre Heerlijkheid Ruinen Route, a recreational cycling route, and the play activities at De Drentse Koe in a farm setting. Depending on the reason for your trip, you can focus on culture, the landscape, cycling or activities with children.

Farm History at the Museum

The De Karstenhoeve Museum Farm is a farm dating from the mid-17th century, a Dutch Rijksmonument (national heritage site), and has largely been preserved in its authentic state. Its extensive collection includes household items, clothing, handicrafts and agricultural equipment. This brings together the history of the farm building and insights into rural life and work. At the same time, Karstenhoeve preserves old objects, values and customs.

The Museum Farm is located at Dr. Larijweg No. 21. The road was built in 1925 and is lined with various farmhouses. This brings together two distinct historical points of reference: the farm dating from the mid-17th century and the road built in 1925.

The Museum Farm is open from 1 May to 1 October, Tuesday to Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check the opening hours again before your visit and take the seasonal opening period into account when planning.

Strip-Field Landscape and Cycling Route

Two landscape storytelling routes around Ruinerwold explain how the local strip-field landscape came into being. The Heerlijkheid Ruinen Route has a different focus: it is a 45-kilometre recreational cycling route. The routes therefore differ in theme: the storytelling routes are about the development of the landscape, while the Heerlijkheid Ruinen Route is about recreational cycling along a specific route. This lets you include landscape history and cycling as separate interests in your travel plans.

On the first Saturday in October, the abundant harvest is sold at an auction. This recurring autumn event is another one of the things to consider when planning a stay.

Play Activities at De Drentse Koe

De Drentse Koe offers outdoor play activities for children in a farm setting. These include tractor rides, petting animals, jumping and climbing. The heated indoor play barn has climbing and sliding equipment, a zip line, a bouncy castle, a building area and traditional Dutch games. There is also a water play area and a climbing adventure above the cows.

The play environments are clearly different: the outdoor area focuses on the farm setting, while the heated barn offers a building area and traditional games as well as climbing and sliding equipment. This makes it easy to choose based on the type of activity you’re looking for. Since 1999, De Drentse Koe has also made ice cream from fresh cow’s milk delivered daily.
