Orvelte has been designated a protected village landscape since 1967. The longhouse farmhouses and rustic buildings preserve the atmosphere of a 19th-century Drenthe esdorp (a village surrounded by arable fields). Of the 17 farmhouses that once stood here, eight remain. If you are planning a trip to Orvelte, you can shape your stay around different interests: the historic village landscape, farm architecture or walking routes.

Farmhouses and Village History

The Bruntingerhof is unique in Drenthe: it is a well-preserved longhouse farmhouse dating from around 1600. The farm was converted into the Orvelte visitor centre. In its large former agricultural building, you can discover what farm life in Orvelte was like around 1900. The two dates refer to different periods at the same farm: its construction around 1600 and the depiction of everyday life around 1900.

Ottenshoes also offers a glimpse into local history. Guides lead visitors through the monumental farmhouse, where historic rooms from 1860 show what life in Orvelte was like at the time. Orvelte Poort offers guided tours of the village and surrounding area, focusing on local history. The visitor centre also hosts a free demonstration about honeybees and the history of beekeeping. These offer different ways to explore the region’s farming past and village life, as well as a specific topic such as beekeeping.

Walking Routes Around Orvelte

Each walking route has its own focus. The Boswachterspad Oer 't Veld crosses historic fields and heathland, follows hedgerows and passes a reconstructed Iron Age farmstead. The Orvelte–Orvelterzand route also passes the farmstead and the old Noordesch: it crosses the farmstead, follows the Noordesch and continues to Orvelterzand on the other side of the Oranjekanaal.

The Knapzakroute Orvelte starts in the historic open-air museum village and follows paved roads through Drenthe’s history. Along the way, it passes the rolling Orvelterzand, extensive forests and newly created nature areas. When comparing routes, you can use the landscapes described as a guide: Oer 't Veld combines historic fields and heathland with hedgerows and the reconstructed farmstead; the route to Orvelterzand has a clearly named destination beyond the canal; and the Knapzakroute also includes extensive forests and newly created nature areas.

Activities and Events

Theodoor’s wooden trail offers several things to try along the way: you can climb into a hollow tree, make music and test your balance between ropes. Zoo Bizar is a mini zoo in an old Saxon farmhouse in the Orvelte open-air museum village. It is home to various small exotic animal species. The two attractions have different focuses: the wooden trail invites you to try out its features, while Zoo Bizar showcases small exotic animals.

Special events and themed days are held regularly in the village centre, including performances by folk groups, special markets and theatre performances. If a particular event date is important to your trip, check the dates when planning.

There are several specific options to choose from when deciding what to do in Orvelte: historic farmhouses and rooms, guided introductions to local history, a variety of walking routes, and other activities and events. You can shape your trip around the topics that interest you most.
