Meppel: Experience culture, history and nature
Accommodation in Meppel
Explore Meppel during a hotel stay through a range of interests: printing history, maritime heritage, remembrance and green spaces. The sites vary in character: some tell the story of printing and the town’s history, while others lead to places of remembrance or into Wilhelminapark.
Mills, water and local history
The Stadtsenfmühle de Vlijt is located on the Sluisgracht in Meppel. Jan Worst Geert zn. laid its foundation stone on 1 October 1858. The Stoombootkade preserves one of the best-preserved parts of Meppel’s maritime past. The mill and the quay offer different historical perspectives: a building with a precisely documented date and the town’s maritime heritage.
Molen de Vlijt is currently closed to visitors due to ongoing renovation work. Check for updates again before your trip.
Church and remembrance
The listed Grote of Mariakerk is located on the Grote Markt; its main entrance is on the Hoofdstraat. Its location and main entrance therefore provide two distinct points of reference. If you are interested in the town’s history, the church adds another topic to the mill and the Stoombootkade.
The “Joods monument” in Meppel commemorates 232 Jewish residents who were deported by the occupying power during the Second World War and murdered in concentration camps. Sixteen sandstone slabs bear the names and dates of birth of 232 Jewish victims. The monument thus combines remembrance of the total number with individual names and dates of birth.
Printmaking and changing exhibitions
At Museum Indruk, visitors can set type using historical techniques, print a page and make their own paper. The Drukkerijmuseum Meppel, by contrast, tells the story of Meppel as a printing town and is housed in three monumental warehouses. The two museums therefore differ in focus: hands-on work with printing techniques at one, and the history of the printing town at the other.
Every three months, the Stedelijk Museum Meppel presents a major changing exhibition featuring works by contemporary artists from the north. If you would like to plan a museum visit during your trip, check the exhibition dates in advance.
Wilhelminapark and routes
Wilhelminapark was laid out between 1915 and 1922 to a design by landscape architect Leonard Springer. You can walk along the River Reest in the park. It also has a wildlife enclosure, a pond with a fountain and a rose garden. In addition to its history, the park offers several distinct areas to consider when planning time outdoors.
The “Stadswandeling Meppel” is a 2.1-kilometre walking tour of the town. The “Route van Geluk” is a cycling route near Meppel, with more than 50 distinctive, welcoming, green and special places along the way. The two routes therefore differ in how you get around. From Meppel, you can also reach the Reestdal, a landscape featuring a winding river and a varied mix of nature and agriculture. While Wilhelminapark is a park in Meppel, the Reestdal is a landscape accessible from the town.
