Montserrat: Gardens, Hiking Trails and Island Culture
Accommodation in Montserrat
An orchid house, a medicinal plant garden, a cactus and succulent garden, and a palm promenade define the Botanical Gardens of the Montserrat National Trust. The Montserrat orchid (Epidendrum montserratense) can be seen in the orchid house. It is endemic to the island and endangered. The Montserrat National Trust preserves and protects Montserrat’s cultural, historical and archaeological heritage, so botanical themes and island history can be explored side by side here.
Landscape Between Water and Volcanic Activity
Dry Waterfall is about 100 feet high. It carries water only during the rainy season or after heavy rainfall. So if seeing a flowing waterfall is important to you, the experience depends on the rainy season and recent precipitation.
The reefs are also part of Montserrat’s natural landscape: they feature structures covered with corals and sponges that are associated with the island’s volcanic activity. Sea turtles, stingrays and fish can often be spotted during reef visits. Green sea turtles, leatherback turtles and hawksbill turtles are found along the coast, but sightings of individual animals are not guaranteed.
The Centre Hills are a birdwatching area in the eastern Caribbean. This gives bird enthusiasts another aspect of Montserrat’s natural environment, alongside the reefs and distinct from the gardens’ plant life.
Hiking Trails for Different Ability Levels
The Hope Ridge Trail passes through cloud forest to Elfin Forest on Baker Hill Mountain, at an elevation of about 2,300 feet. According to the description, this hike is suitable only for fit, very experienced hikers. The Oriole Walkway starts with a gentle climb, then ascends steeply to Lawyer’s Mountain. A short spur leads to a clearing at the trail’s highest point, 1,287 feet above sea level. From there, you can enjoy views north and south across the island.
The Duberry-Cassava Trail can be hiked on its own or used to connect the Cot and Oriole Walkway trails. The Dry Waterfall Trail crosses several moderately challenging gullies; one section runs directly along the rocky bed of Soldier Ghaut. Trail conditions can vary. Check them before hiking; guided birdwatching tours may also vary.
History and Cultural Heritage
At the Montserrat National Museum in Little Bay, artifacts and exhibitions tell the story of the island’s history and culture, from pre-Columbian times to the present day. Check visitor guidelines before planning your museum visit. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory was established in response to the volcanic eruption that began in July 1995. The museum focuses on the island’s long history, while the observatory centers on a defining event in its more recent past.
Plymouth is located in Montserrat’s Exclusion Zone (Zone V) and can be accessed only with a certified tour guide. Check current tour arrangements before visiting. From Little Bay, it is also possible to visit a colony of Antillean fruit bats in two caves with a tour guide; confirm current arrangements for this tour as well.
The calabash fruit is also part of the island’s culture and is associated with Montserrat’s African heritage. Traditionally, it was made into tableware, musical instruments, bags and decorative items. Goat Water, meanwhile, is Montserrat’s national dish.
Activities by the Sea
Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are offered on the relatively calm Caribbean Sea near Little Bay. Conditions can vary. You can also kayak to Rendezvous Bay for snorkeling. The beach is considered Montserrat’s only white-sand beach. Check current options with the provider and sea conditions before setting out.
When planning your trip, the different highlights may help you decide: Montserrat offers botanical attractions, challenging hikes, island history and water activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Montserrat, consider which of these experiences you want to define your trip.
