Naryn Region: Alpine Lakes, Mountain Passes and Tash-Rabat
Accommodation in Naryn Region
Key attractions in Naryn Region include the historic Tash-Rabat, alpine lakes and mountain landscapes. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are particularly interested in cultural history, natural scenery, or activities such as hiking and trekking.
Tash-Rabat and the Caravan Routes
Tash-Rabat is a caravanserai built during the Kara-Khanid period, in the 11th to 12th centuries AD. The structure is made of slate. Its former function was connected with routes to Kashgar via the Tash-Rabat and Torugart passes: Tash-Rabat served as a caravanserai for caravans traveling along these routes. Its construction period, materials and function give the site a clear cultural and historical focus.
Lakes and Protected Areas
The Karatal-Zhapyryk State Reserve is divided into three zones: forest, and the mountain lakes Son-Kul and Chatyr-Kul. Chatyr Kul is a state-protected area in Naryn Oblast. The two lakes are therefore also associated with different landscape contexts: as zones of the Karatal-Zhapyryk Reserve and, in the case of Chatyr Kul, as a protected area in its own right.
Salkyn Tor National Park features lush forests. The Eki-Naryn Valley is characterized by meadows, pastures and pine forests. In the eastern part of Naryn Province, Naryn State Reserve is home to 1,870 plant species and 50 animal species. These details give an impression of the variety of natural landscapes in the region, but do not imply that any particular species will be seen.
The landscapes around the lakes also differ in their described features. The Saman Kol Lakes Area comprises five alpine lakes. Kol Tor Lake is an alpine lake in the Tien Shan Mountains. These descriptions can help you distinguish between a group of lakes and a single mountain lake when choosing a destination.
Hiking, Trekking and Nature Experiences
Unspoiled turquoise water and high cliffs define the landscape at Kel Suu Lake. The lake is suitable for trekking and camping. Hiking and picnicking are suitable activities at Kol Tor Lake. The two lakes therefore offer different experiences: trekking and camping at Kel Suu, and hiking and a break outdoors at Kol Tor.
The Teshik Geopark and Nature Area combines unique rock formations with gently rolling meadows and diverse wildlife and plant life. It offers scenic hiking opportunities. In the Kor Bulak Canyons, visitors can explore winding trails and discover hidden viewpoints. If you are mainly interested in hiking, the destinations mentioned differ in their landscapes and the activities described for each.
Mountain Passes and Guided Day Tours
Moldo Ashuu Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass on the way to Son Kul Lake. It offers panoramic views of the Tien Shan Mountains and the valleys below. This makes the pass a distinct landscape feature alongside the lakes: the focus here is on the mountain route and the views.
Visit Naryn offers guided day tours in the Naryn Region. The tours visit local historical sites, scenic viewpoints, national parks or nature destinations. Tour details may change, so check the latest tour information before making plans.
