Volon can be understood through a range of historical and cultural points of reference: two named churches, the Torrazzo in the town center, a local legend and the Sagra patronale della SS.TrinitĂ . These topics differ in place, period and character. When planning a stay, you can decide whether you are most interested in church architecture, local lore or the festival dates.

Churches from different periods

The current building of the church VOLON SantissimaTrinità e Madonna del Rosario was built in 1929–1930 in the neoclassical style. The church contains several wooden statues, including a statue of Saint Zeno. In 1955, the presbytery was extended. The presbytery is the altar area; the extension therefore adds a later change to the building’s history, affecting its interior. These details offer two different architectural points of reference: the style describes the building, while the wooden statues and later extension concern the interior.

The old church of the Santissima Trinità di Volon stands on Via Chiesa Vecchia. It was built in 1499 at the behest of Count Francesco Miniscalchi. While the dates 1929–1930 and the 1955 extension are key features of the current building, the old church is associated with the specific commission of 1499.

The Torrazzo and local lore

The Torrazzo is a four-story brick building in the town center of Volon. Its design offers a different point of focus from the neoclassical church with its wooden statues: the Torrazzo is notable for its number of stories and building material, while the church is characterized by its style and furnishings.

Another trace of local history is the legend of the “boio dei Miniscalchi.” It is set at the source of the Bussè and remains alive in the collective memory. Unlike the dated church buildings, it is understood through its story and setting: the source gives the legend a specific location, while its enduring place in memory reflects its cultural significance.

Landscape and the annual festival

The origin of the town’s name also offers a glimpse into the history of the landscape. The origins of the name Volon are linked to the Campanea minor, an extensive wetland east of Zevio that also included the present-day area of Tombazosana. In the broader regional context, extensive drainage and land-clearing works in the 12th and 13th centuries were carried out to create arable land. Near Volon is Parco di Pontoncello, a protected area along the Adige in the Zevio area. The historical development of the landscape and a nearby protected area thus represent different regional points of reference.

The Sagra patronale della SS.Trinità in Volon features food stalls and musical evenings. It is held during the second week of June. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check that year’s program and schedule your stay around the specific dates.
