Sorgà: Rice-growing Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Sorgà
Two themes are especially defining when deciding whether Sorgà suits your travel interests: its rice-growing landscape and historic architectural heritage. The Strada del Riso crosses the entire area from north to south. Its surroundings are characterized by country roads, rivers, and rice fields, which are rich in herons. The result is a landscape in which agriculture and waterways are part of the character of the place.
Rice-growing Landscape and Tradition
In the Sorgà area, the rice fields cover about a thousand Veronese fields. This agricultural area may change over time. The Vialone Nano Veronese rice-growing tradition dates back 500 years, and Sorgà lies within the designated production area for Riso Nano Vialone Veronese with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This distinguishes the landscape, the long tradition, and the product’s geographical classification: they describe different aspects of local rice culture.
Architectural History and Art in Sorgà
Corte Bugna detta Belvedere was probably built in the second half of the 15th century. The complex contains 16th-century frescoes attributed to Giulio Romano. One room is called the “Stanza di Cesare”; its illusionistic painted architecture creates the impression of a built space. Its construction date, frescoes, and wall decoration give Corte Bugna several points of interest in art and architectural history.
The “Palazzon del Diavolo” is also associated with Giulio Romano: it was built in Sorgà in the second half of the 16th century based on his designs. At the same time, legends about the devil, ghosts, and the “pozzo rasador” are associated with the building. Its local heritage therefore encompasses both its history and the stories handed down about it.
Corte Italia showcases a different form of rural architecture. The typical estate consists of a manor house, stables, porticoes, and workers’ houses arranged in a row. Corte Grimani preserves the originality and elegance of its 17th-century forms. While Corte Italia is characterized by the arrangement of its various buildings, Corte Grimani is distinguished by its historic forms.
The Chiesa di Pampuro was built in the 15th century and preserves fragments of 15th- and 16th-century frescoes. Casa Natale di Antonio Ascari offers another way to explore local history: after standing vacant for many years, it was completely restored. A plaque at the entrance to “Ca' Ascarì” commemorates Antonio Ascari’s birthplace.
Visitor Information and Cultural Program
One important visitor detail about the Mulino e Pila di Pontepossero is that it is not open to visitors. It lies right beside the Tione River and has been documented since the 14th century. Its historical significance and location can be appreciated without planning a visit inside the mill.
Since 2012, the Biblioteca Civica “Lara Toso” has organized UTLEP, a series of cultural and educational events open to everyone. Events take place every Saturday at 3:30 p.m., except on public holidays, in the Sala Civica di Bonferraro. If you are planning to attend a particular event, check its date before your visit.
Since 2012, the Biblioteca Civica “Lara Toso” has also offered four free internet workstations to registered users on request. If you want to use this service, check the details in advance before relying on it.
Local Cuisine as Another Guide
La Casa del Vino in Sorgà serves local dishes such as Trippa alla parmigiana, Baccalà, and donkey ragout with Amarone, as well as local cured meats and wines by the glass. The menu and opening arrangements may change, so check the current offerings before visiting. Together with the long rice-growing tradition, the local cuisine offers another point of reference when weighing Sorgà as a destination for its culture and regional food.
