Paese can be considered as a travel destination through several specific highlights: historic villas, the history of Venetian resistance, and an area shaped by ditches and canals. The buildings represent different centuries. If you would like to explore historic architecture alongside local and landscape history, Paese offers several distinct perspectives on the municipality.

Villas from several centuries

Casa Quaglia is a Gothic villa building from the 15th century and is considered one of the oldest examples of villa architecture in the Treviso area. Villa La Quiete was built in 1778 by Marquis Giuseppe De Canonicis; Villa Panizza was built by the Malanotte family in 1810 and extended around 1870. The comparison shows different periods: Casa Quaglia represents the 15th century, Villa La Quiete 1778, and Villa Panizza 1810 as well as an extension around 1870. For Panizza, construction and later expansion were two separate stages. This lets you consider the buildings in light of their different histories of construction and development, rather than reducing them to a single year of construction.

Political history and sacred art

At Villa La Quiete, political history adds to the story of its construction. Around the middle of the 19th century, it became one of the most important centres of Venetian resistance against the Austrians. Teresa De Perissinotto, the wife of Daniele Manin, lived there in exile from 1848 to 1849. The villa is thus connected to a specific historical period that came well after its construction. The Oratorio di Villa is integrated into the garden of Villa La Quiete as a chapel. A 16th-century fresco depicts the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus. It predates the villa, which was built in 1778; the ensemble thus brings an earlier work and the later villa building together in a temporal context.

Another stop in church history is the Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Padernello. It was built in the early years of the 18th century on the foundations of the first place of worship and consecrated by Bishop Morosini in 1712. The new building thus follows an earlier place of worship; the year 1712 marks the consecration of the later church. Compared with Villa La Quiete, built in 1778, the church dates from an earlier period. It adds a different historical context to the story of the villas.

Waterways and orientation

The surroundings are also among Paese’s defining features. The area has numerous ditches and canals fed by artificial canals diverted from the Piave, especially the Canale della Vittoria di Ponente. This perspective on the waterways extends beyond individual buildings to take in the wider Paese area.

Villa Panizza adds another point of interest: the restored villa houses Paese’s municipal library. The building therefore represents both 19th-century architectural history and the home of a local cultural institution.

An autumn event

“Delizie d'autunno 2026 – Festa di San Martino” is scheduled to take place in Paese on 8 November 2026. A market event, food and drink, and public entertainment are planned. If the date is relevant to your trip, check the date and programme before planning your stay.
