For a trip to Maser, you can plan different priorities: art and architectural history, a longer walk along the ridge, or a scheduled event. Villa di Maser is at the heart of the area’s cultural history; the Sentiero delle Due Rocche is a longer hike, while the Mostra della Ciliegia di Maser takes place on a date in May. You can plan your stay according to whether you want to spend more time exploring architectural history, go on an extended hike, or set aside a day for a scheduled event.

Villa di Maser and the Tempietto

Around 1550, architect Andrea Palladio designed Villa di Maser as a grand residence for the agricultural estate of brothers Daniele and Marcantonio Barbaro. Its purpose combined a desire for grandeur with the management of an agricultural estate, so the building’s history includes not only Palladio’s design but also its intended use. UNESCO describes Villa di Maser as an outstanding example of the Palladian country villa type. This gives you two ways to understand it: through Palladio’s architecture and through the role the building was intended to serve for the brothers.

The villa’s interiors include six rooms richly decorated with frescoes by Paolo Veronese, as well as elegant stucco work by Alessandro Vittoria. The frescoes and stucco represent distinct aspects of its artistic design. Together with Palladio’s architectural design, they make for a multifaceted cultural theme that goes beyond the history of the building itself.

The Tempietto di Villa Barbaro is also part of the cultural picture. It served both as the villa’s chapel and as a parish church for Borgo di Maser. This dual function offers a historical perspective distinct from the villa’s origins: the Tempietto was connected both to the villa and to the borgo.

Ridge trail and walk

The Sentiero delle Due Rocche is a ridge trail offering views over the hills of Maser. Allow about five hours for the hike; this is an approximate guide. Apart from its length, the trail has no particular difficulties. When planning your day, the main point to keep in mind is the time involved: this is a longer outing, not a short walk.

An oratory can also be a destination for a walk with panoramic views. The final stretch can only be reached on foot; one access route starts at Forcella Mostaccin in Maser, among other places. The outdoor options differ in length: this walk has a final section on foot, whereas the other is a hike estimated to take about five hours.

Event dates and getting there

The Mostra della Ciliegia di Maser takes place on the last Sunday in May at Villa di Maser and along the lime-tree avenue in front of it. As event dates can change, check the specific date before your trip. This lets you plan your stay around the event day rather than assume it can be visited on any day.

Free, unattended parking is available beside the entrance to Villa di Maser. Check the parking rules before your visit, as conditions may change. MOM bus line 112 runs from Montebelluna station towards Bassano and stops at Villa di Maser. Bus routes and schedules may change, so check your connection before departure.

If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Maser, these differences can help you plan your schedule: the event takes place in May, while the hike takes about five hours. This way, you can weigh cultural history, a walk and a longer hike as different priorities for your trip.
