Valle San Giorgio: History and Trails on Monte Gemola
Accommodation in Valle San Giorgio
Valle San Giorgio lies in a quiet valley between Monte Gemola and Monte Mottolone. The landscape is one of the defining features of the area; the parish church, Villa Mantua Benavides, and trails on Gemola also come together here. The villa lies within the protected landscape of the Euganean Hills Regional Park.
Villa and Parish Church: History in a Small Area
Villa Mantua Benavides is a historic residence near the parish church of San Giorgio. At the end of the 16th century, the heirs of Marco Mantua Benavides had the house built. In 1762, Bishop Giustiniani rented the villa as a rectory for the clergy. It also hosted Cardinal Rezzonico, the future Pope Clement XIII. Today, the villa is home to Eugheneis – Centro di Formazione e Promozione Culturale. Its construction, later use, and historic guests give the villa different connections to the history of the area.
The parish church of San Giorgio was first mentioned in a public document in 1293. Its high altar features an early 17th-century painting depicting Saint George and the dragon. Remains of a Roman tomb are preserved in the south wall. The written record, sacred artwork, and masonry remains offer different ways of exploring local history.
Trails on Monte Gemola
There are several specific routes for hiking. The circular trail around Monte Gemola starts at Villa Mantua Benavides and passes beneath the bell tower of the parish church of Valle San Giorgio. Parco Romanato is a way station on the Sentiero Beata Beatrice: the ascent to Gemola begins there, and the return loop ends there. This makes the park a reference point for both the ascent and the return journey on this route.
The Sentiero Beata Beatrice is considered passable year-round; spring and autumn are also recommended, while particular caution is advised in seasonal conditions. For this trail, you can park in Valle San Giorgio at Parco Romanato or opposite the church. As parking regulations may change, check this information before setting off. An alternative circular hike, Valle San Giorgio–Baone–Este, is listed as 6.63 kilometers long. The distance gives you a specific point of reference when comparing circular hikes by length.
Parkland and Culture in Baone
Parco Romanato is located on the former brolo of Villa Mantua Benavides—the villa’s former garden and orchard. It was designed as a meeting place for the local community and visitors, and aims to bring together well-being, environmental awareness, and the memory of the area. Its connection to the former garden also explains the park’s historic relationship with the villa.
Another cultural venue in the municipality of Baone is MUSeuM, the Museo degli Euganei. It is located in Villa Beatrice d’Este on Monte Gemola. The visitor route is divided into nine themed rooms. The natural history section presents the flora and fauna of the Euganean Hills, with audio and video content activated by proximity sensors. In this way, the museum places a distinct emphasis on the natural history of the hills.
La Corte Medioevale represents a different cultural focus. The association was founded in 1990 in Valle San Giorgio di Baone to revive historical events and old traditions of the Euganean Hills. It organizes historical events, medieval processions, and exhibitions, and promotes traditional crafts and artisanal activities. If you would like to plan around a specific event, check its dates separately.
