Pontelongo’s history is closely linked to the Bacchiglione and its sugar tradition. The river is more than just a feature of the landscape: bridge building, transport and industrial history are all closely connected to it. At the same time, architecture, memorial sites and museum exhibits tell other stories about the town. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth exploring Pontelongo’s river and industrial history, alongside its culture and outdoor activities.

The Bacchiglione: Bridge, Mill and Industry

Pontelongo’s historic stone bridge had three arches. The central one was considerably higher and wider than the other two, allowing boats to pass through. On 17 September 1882, a flood on the Bacchiglione destroyed the bridge. Its design and its destruction thus belong to two distinct chapters of the river’s history: boat traffic shaped the structure, while the flood changed the town.

Pontelongo’s mill also connects the river with industry. It is documented as having been in operation since at least 1875 and was founded by Oreste Centanin. Steam power was used in production, while the Bacchiglione also served as a transport route. The mill continues to shape the town’s silhouette from the left bank. Another industrial landmark is the sugar factory, built on a bend in the Bacchiglione on 26 June 1910. Together, these examples show the different roles the river played in production, transport and shaping Pontelongo.

Sugar Tradition and Local Events

In 2006, the municipal administration declared Pontelongo the “Paese dello Zucchero,” or “Sugar Town.” The Festival della Dolcezza takes place on the last Sunday in November, the first Sunday in December and the feast day of the patron saint Sant’Andrea, celebrated on 30 November. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific dates for the relevant year.

Over the years, various activities have been offered in connection with Pontelongo’s sugar tradition, including train rides to the sugar factory, public demonstrations of sugar sculptures and workshops for young pastry chefs. These events are part of the history of the sugar tradition; they are not a reliable guide to future event programmes. When choosing when to travel, the event dates for the relevant year are therefore the key consideration.

Architecture, Art and the GeSTA Museum

Built in 1938, the Ex Casa del Fascio is considered one of the rare examples of Futurist architecture in the architectural landscape of Veneto. The building was partially accessible during events; it also has a ramp for step-free access. The information was last updated on 31 March 2023. Check current access arrangements before your trip.

Villa Foscarini Erizzo was probably built in the second half of the 16th century as a summer residence for the Venetian Foscarini da San Stae family. The GeSTA Museum (Guerra e Saccisica Testimonianze Avvenimenti) offers a different historical perspective. It opened in April 2014 and, in its first phase, focuses on the First World War and the soldiers of the Saccisica. Most of the materials are presented digitally, alongside display cases containing wartime objects, reproductions of documents about soldiers and historical uniforms.

Artworks also contribute to the town’s history: in 2020, Tony Gallo created a mural on a façade of the G. Leopardi middle school. In 2022, Mr Zatti donated the work “Dante pensante” to the municipal administration. The Parco della Rimembranza was inaugurated as early as 1927. These dates provide a timeline for a range of cultural themes without reducing them to a single period.

Terranova and the River Landscape

San Geminiano di Terranova is a hamlet of Pontelongo. Following the straightening of the river course in 1859, its church lies on the right bank. The two parts of the area around San Geminiano are connected by a footbridge. There is also a historical connection: a navigable route via Padua, Battaglia, Bovolenta and Pontelongo links the Euganean Hills with the lagoon near Chioggia. It places Pontelongo in a wider context between hills and lagoon, but does not in itself provide information about current boating services.

When planning your stay, you can weigh these themes against one another: the sugar factory and mill offer insight into industrial history, while GeSTA, architecture and art provide other cultural perspectives. The Area attrezzata Sport e Salute in Pontelongo was designed for physical activity, outdoor recreation and general well-being. Outdoor activities thus complement the town’s historical and cultural points of interest.
