Discover Ponte San Nicolò
Accommodation in Ponte San Nicolò
You can plan your trip to Ponte San Nicolò around a range of interests: a named cycling loop leads to the town, while its villas, churches and bridges offer different architectural and artistic histories. This allows you to focus your stay on either cycling or historic buildings.
Cycling route and a break in Isola dell’Abbà
The cycling loop “Da Padova alla Laguna sud di Venezia, lungo il Canale Roncajette e il Canale Pontelongo” leads to Ponte San Nicolò. Its title describes the route from Padua to the southern lagoon of Venice along the Canale Roncajette and the Canale Pontelongo. You can take a break on the route at Isola dell’Abbà, a charming rural hamlet in Ponte San Nicolò. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the route’s title describes the wider regional setting, while Isola dell’Abbà is a potential stop located specifically in Ponte San Nicolò.
Villas with different architectural histories
Villa Da Rio is a 16th-century manor villa with an attached chapel. The property also includes a rural building and a dovecote; the dovecote dates from the 16th century. The estate is private and cannot be visited. Villa Crescente offers a different historical perspective: it was built in the early 20th century, modelled on medieval castles. Its attic features paintings and frieze decorations. The comparison shows a different relationship with the past: Villa Crescente takes the medieval castle as its model, despite being built much later, while Villa Da Rio itself dates from the 16th century.
Chiesa di Roncajette: architectural history and art
The origins of the Chiesa di Roncajette are dated to around 1130; it took its present form during a renovation in the 18th century. These two dates refer to different aspects: one indicates the church’s origins, while the other relates to its current appearance. The church houses an early 15th-century polyptych attributed to the Maestro di Roncajette. The wooden Polittico di Roncajette was restored in 1998 and placed in the sacristy. The periods mentioned thus span the church’s approximate origins, its later renovation and the restoration of a work of art.
Bridges and sculptures
The present-day bridge in Ponte San Nicolò connects the town’s two banks. Inaugurated in 1913, it is a single-span steel bridge. Parts of the Casa Turcato mills may still be visible beneath it. This structure therefore combines the practical function of connecting the banks with a link to the history of milling.
Roncajette also has a visible steel pedestrian suspension bridge from the early 20th century, which is now completely abandoned. The two bridges offer a clear contrast: one connects the banks, while the other is an abandoned footbridge. Outside the Roncaglia-Rio cemetery stand monumental Corten steel sculptures entitled “I Guardiani della Dormiente” by Antonio Ievolella.
