Discover Camposampiero: Sanctuaries, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Camposampiero
Camposampiero has a strong focus on sacred heritage and art history, complemented by a medieval tower, a landscape shaped by Roman planning, and a spring area. The themes differ considerably: at the Santuario del Noce, artworks featuring St Anthony take centre stage; at the Santuario della Visione, a preserved cell is the focus; Risorgive Fontane Bianche draws attention to wetlands and nature. When planning your accommodation, you may therefore want to start by deciding whether to focus on sanctuaries, the landscape, or a particular market day or festival date.
Sanctuaries and Art History
The Santuario del Noce was commissioned in 1432 by Count Gregorio Callegari di Camposampiero. A fresco cycle by Girolamo Tessari, known as Del Santo, depicts miracles attributed to St Anthony. In the apse, an altarpiece by Bonifacio De Pitati commands attention; it shows St Anthony preaching from a walnut tree. Two distinct art-historical highlights come together here: a cycle depicting miracles and a specific scene on the altarpiece.
The Santuario della Visione preserves the cell where St Anthony had a vision of embracing the Infant Jesus. The Madonna della Salute is a Renaissance oratory of popular devotion in Camposampiero and thus another, differently classified aspect of the town’s sacred heritage. Together, these places offer different thematic perspectives: artworks and depictions of St Anthony on the one hand, and the cell associated with the vision and an oratory of popular devotion on the other.
Routes and Getting Around
The Santuari Antoniani area is less than a ten-minute walk from Camposampiero railway station. The Ultimo Cammino is about 25 kilometres long and connects the sanctuaries of Camposampiero with the Santuario dell’Arcella and the Basilica del Santo. These two details help with different planning questions: the under-ten-minute journey refers to the walk from the station to the sanctuary area; the approximately 25 kilometres refers to the length of the Ultimo Cammino.
The Treviso–Ostiglia cycle and footpath runs near the Santuario del Noce. The Santuari Antoniani area has a bookshop, a self-service refreshment area, toilets and a drinking-water fountain. These visitor facilities may change, so check their current availability before your visit.
Nature and Local History
The Risorgive Fontane Bianche area lies between the municipalities of Santa Giustina in Colle and Camposampiero. The nature park includes the 18th-century Chiesetta di San Prosdocimo and a wetland shaped by spring outflows. The spring waters give rise to a distinctive wetland with abundant flora and fauna, some species of which are endemic to the area. The area is visited for nature study.
Camposampiero lies in the landscape of the Roman centuriation known as the Graticolato Romano, laid out around the 1st century BC. The tall tower of the Torre della Rocca is the only tangible evidence of Camposampiero’s medieval past. The town’s history thus brings together different periods: the Roman land-planning system and a surviving trace of the Middle Ages.
Market and Annual Festival Date
A municipal market is held every Wednesday in Piazza Castello. The Festa della Madonna della Salute takes place every year on 21 November. The market follows a day of the week, while the festival takes place on a fixed date in the year. If either date matters for your trip, check the local date or the programme for the relevant year in advance.
