Discover Sismano
Accommodation in Sismano
Sismano is an unusually compact medieval village clustered around its castle and marked by two cylindrical towers. The Castello di Sismano still retains the typical structure of a fortified medieval settlement; its origins date back to the 11th century. Together, the village and castle shape the historic character of the place.
The Castello and the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Corsini
The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Corsini lies within the Castello di Sismano. It was built between 1640 and 1643, giving it a different historical timeframe from the castle, whose origins date back to the 11th century. The stone baptismal font also bears its own date: it was made in 1646 and features the Corsini family coat of arms in several places. The font was created three years after the church’s construction period ended. The origins of the Castello and the church’s construction and furnishing dates can therefore be understood as distinct historical points in time.
The church’s furnishings include a 17th-century portrait of Saint Andrew Corsini, attributed to Andrea Polinori, and a depiction of the Madonna del Rosario, attributed to Palmiro Alvi. A fresco on the left wall shows Saint Andrew Corsini commending Sismano and its village to Saint Francis of Assisi. The three works each offer a different focus: the portrait depicts Saint Andrew Corsini, the Madonna presents another religious theme, and the fresco explicitly includes Sismano in the scene.
Stone Lanes and the Cammino del Lago Tiberino
You can explore Sismano on foot along stone lanes that preserve the history of the medieval town centre. The lanes offer a different perspective from the compact village panorama around the Castello: they take you through the town centre itself. This places the overall form of the settlement and its stone-built structure side by side as two perspectives on the same historic setting.
The Cammino del Lago Tiberino also passes through Sismano. The route is 82 kilometres long, forms a loop and is divided into eleven stages; Sismano is one of the five castles along the way. Its length and stages describe different aspects of the route: the loop refers to its overall form, while the stages divide it into sections. This distinguishes the Cammino from a walk through Sismano’s town centre. If you would like to include the route in your travel plans, check the latest information with the operator in advance, as route details may change.
A Wine Shop in the Old Town Centre
There is also an enoteca within the walls of the old town centre. During your stay, it offers an opportunity to discover the flavours of the area. This adds a culinary connection to exploring Sismano’s townscape and church art.
