San Gemini: Giostra dell’Arme and Church Art
Accommodation in San Gemini
San Gemini brings together themes that can give your trip a clear focus: the Giostra dell’Arme jousting tournament, church art, historic buildings, and Roman traces. The Geolab and hiking trails in the Monti Martani area offer additional options. If you are looking for a hotel in San Gemini, you can plan your trip around a festival, sacred art, or geoscience and hiking.
Giostra dell’Arme and local food
The Giostra dell’Arme is a jousting tournament featuring six riders from the rival city districts of Rione Rocca and Rione Piazza. The competition consists of three rounds; its events involve a lance, a 4 cm ring, and a coat of arms shield. The two Rioni are the focus as rivals.
During the Giostra dell’Arme, the taverns serve traditional local dishes such as Picchiarelli, Pizza sotto lu focu, and grilled meat. The food is part of the festival period, so check which taverns are open for the particular edition.
Church art and historic buildings
The Chiesa di San Francesco has a single-nave interior in the Gothic style. The church also has frescoes from the 15th and 17th centuries, as well as a particularly valuable 15th-century wooden crucifix. Here, a Gothic interior, wall paintings from two centuries, and a wooden crucifix come together.
An urn containing relics attributed to Santo Gemine is kept in the Chiesa di Santo Gemine. He is the city’s patron saint. The relics were found in 1775 in a walled-up niche beside the sacristy. The Chiesa di San Carlo has a 14th-century ciborium with the painting “Madonna and Child Among Saints and Angels,” attributed to a follower of Boccati.
The apse of the Abbazia di San Nicolò contains a fresco dating from 1295 by Master Rogerino da Todi. The Palazzo Vecchio o Pretorio adds evidence of former city government to these sacred sites: for many centuries, it was the seat of San Gemini’s government, headed by a podestà . It is also an example of Gothic architecture with evidence of painting.
Roman traces, geoscience, and hiking trails
An atrium with an impluvium and several rooms with geometric floor mosaics dating from the 1st century AD were uncovered in a private house in the old town. The smaller mosaic is made of black and white tesserae, while the larger one is made of tesserae in different colors. According to the city’s 2025 description, visits had been temporarily suspended.
The Geolab offers a different focus: its permanent exhibition presents geoscience through interactive equipment that guides visitors in observation and scientific experiments. Here, geoscience and hands-on exploration through experiments take center stage, while the churches and historic buildings show other cultural aspects of San Gemini.
If you would like to plan a hike alongside your cultural visits, the Monti Martani area offers a selection of trails with varying levels of difficulty. Their starting points are easy to reach from San Gemini. This means you can include hiking options in the wider Monti Martani area in your travel plans without conflating them with the attractions in town.
