Carnaiola is situated on a hill at 350 metres above sea level. The town offers several specific points of interest for a trip: the castle and older traces along the Chiani, the history of an important crossing over the Chiane, and the vineyards on the slope below the town. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Carnaiola, these themes can help you plan your days according to your interests.

Local History from the Ford to the Bridge

The Castello di Carnaiola was built around the year 1000 by the people of Orvieto to keep watch over the ford across the Chiani. Its construction date and purpose go hand in hand: the castle can be understood both in terms of when it was built and its function at the ford at the time. A different historical period is represented by the fortification built in Roman times near the Ponte del Muro Grosso. This Roman fortification provides an earlier chronological reference point than the Castello, built around the year 1000.

The bridge at Carnaiola was one of the most important crossings over the Chiane. A former inn at the bridge offered many travellers a place to rest. Visitors interested in history can interpret these landmarks according to their function: the Castello, associated with keeping watch over the ford, represents defence; the bridge and former inn draw attention to crossing and hospitality. In this way, the history of the routes and the history of the town complement each other, without treating the different buildings and places as a single complex.

A Suggested Walking Tour of Carnaiola

With the exception of the final stop, the proposed sightseeing route runs entirely along Via Garibaldi. The street is therefore a specific point of reference for the main part of the route; the final stop follows a different path. If you include the walk in your sightseeing plans, bear this exception in mind.

Winegrowing and a Visit to Cantina Murogrosso

At Cantina Murogrosso, you can visit the winery and learn about each stage of production with a personal guide. Arrange your visit before you arrive. The Cantina’s vineyard lies on the slope below Carnaiola. It was planted in 1971 with five traditional grape varieties of Orvieto DOC: Trebbiano, Verdello, Malvasia, Grechetto and Drupeccio. Chardonnay was added in the 1990s, following the new regulations.

The visit and the vineyard’s history offer two different ways to explore winegrowing: the tour focuses on the production stages, while the 1971 planting and the later addition of Chardonnay offer insight into how the range of grape varieties has evolved. If you are interested in both, you can consider these as separate focuses for your visit.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

For trip planning, the main difference in preparation between the suggested walk and the winery visit is that Via Garibaldi provides a point of reference for the walk around town, while the Cantina visit should be arranged before you arrive. This allows you to schedule local history and a possible winery appointment separately in your itinerary. Decide which is more important to you before planning your visits.
