Discover Torgiano: Art, Wine and Olive Oil
Accommodation in Torgiano
Torgiano is a fortified medieval village at the confluence of the Tiber and Chiascio rivers, surrounded by rolling hills covered with vineyards and olive groves. For travellers looking for a hotel for a culture-focused stay, museums, outdoor art and traces of local history offer a variety of points of interest. You can focus on ceramics and art, winemaking or the olive tree.
Ceramics and art at MACC
The Museo Arte Ceramica Contemporanea (MACC) is housed on two floors of Palazzo Malizia and is part of the Sistema Museale dell'Umbria. The ground floor features 58 works donated to Torgiano by Nino Caruso. The exhibition “Vaselle d'autore per il Vino Novello” documents works created for an event conceived by Nino Caruso in 1996. Here, you can encounter both a specific donation and works from a clearly dated artistic context.
Wine and olive oil in the museum collections
MUVIT displays archaeological finds, ceramics, engravings, winemaking tools and waffle irons. The collection also includes the monumental “Catone” wine press from the 18th century, which was used until 1973. It provides a tangible technical example of the history of winemaking; the other collection areas mentioned range from archaeological objects to everyday items.
The Museo dell'Olivo e dell'Olio (MOO) focuses on a different subject: it is housed in an old olive oil mill that remained in operation until the last century. On display are archaeological finds, ceramics, books and other material relating to the mythological origins, production and spread, and different uses of the olive tree and olive oil. The subject matter therefore spans everything from origins and production to different uses. Reservations are required to visit MOO from Monday to Sunday; arrange your reservation before you arrive.
Vinarelli and historical landmarks
Vinarelli has been held every year in August in Torgiano since 1983, as part of Agosto torgianese: in this open-air painting event, artists dilute their paints with wine. Exact dates may vary from year to year, so check the event details in advance. The permanent Vinarelli exhibition is housed in the former stables of Palazzo Graziani Baglioni and displays a selection of representative works from each edition. Alongside the annual painting event, visitors can also view works from its various editions.
Other landmarks add to the picture of the village. The Chiesa della Madonna dell'Ulivello contains paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Torre Baglioni is a remnant of Torgiano's ancient fortified walls. Together with the medieval character of the village and its position at the confluence of the Tiber and Chiascio rivers, these features provide a historical and scenic setting for your stay.
Winery visits by reservation
Lungarotti in Torgiano also offers a tangible connection to wine culture: winery tours and tastings are available by prior reservation. As availability may vary, it is advisable to confirm reservation options before making plans. This allows you to add a wine-related visit to the cultural themes of your stay without conflating the different offerings.
