Montecchio lies west of Giano dell'Umbria in a commanding position along the Via Flaminia Vetus, the historic link between Massa Martana and Foligno. The castle, churches and archaeological museum reveal different sides of the town; municipal routes complement its historical focus with practical ways to explore the area by car, on foot or by mountain bike. This offers a destination that combines architectural history, an archaeological collection and designated routes.

Castle, Lanes and Churches

Montecchio Castle preserves part of its walls, built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 14th century. Narrow lanes and medieval stone buildings surround the castle square. Below the castle stands the Chiesa di San Rocco, between the original and modern routes of the Via Flaminia. It was built in the 13th century in the style of the second Spoleto Romanesque period. The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo preserves its medieval structure, made of white and pink stone blocks. San Rocco is notable for its construction period, style and location, while San Bartolomeo stands out for its structure and the colours of its stone.

Archaeology in the Historic Centre

The Museo archeologico di Montecchio is located in the Borgo’s historic centre. It houses materials from the site of the Villa di Rufione and the surrounding area. The collection thus complements the architectural history of the castle and churches with an archaeological perspective on a named site and its surroundings.

Routes with Different Details

The “Passeggiando per Castelli…tra storia e leggenda” route is 7.8 km long and can be completed by car, on foot or by mountain bike. It has 200 metres of elevation gain and is rated E for trekking. The 7.8 km distance is one way. The archaeological route “Archeovagando tra sacro e profano lungo la Flaminia vetus” is 14 km long, can be completed by car or mountain bike, and has 320 metres of ascent. Both routes list car and mountain bike as possible ways to travel; only the first is specifically designated as a walking route. For planning a walk, it also gives the one-way distance and trekking grade. Check the route details before setting off.

Woodland and History

The woodland belonging to the Università Agraria di Montecchio lies at an altitude of about 700 metres above sea level and consists mostly of holm oaks. One historical record concerning the institution dates to 1911: at that time, 633.19 hectares of woodland were assigned to it, having previously belonged to the Degli Atti and Corsini families. This account of the woodland therefore describes both its elevation and tree species and a past event involving the families concerned.
