Monte Vibiano Vecchio brings together architectural history, art and a wine-growing landscape. A round-arched entrance gate and historic buildings shape the village, alongside works by Gerardo Dottori, rolling hills and experiences centred on wine and local produce.

The Gate and Architectural History

Monte Vibiano Vecchio is entered through a single gate with a rounded stone arch. The Vibi built the gate and intended it to serve as a military outpost. The rounded arch describes its architectural form, while its planned use as an outpost reflects its military function. The complex also includes Palazzo Fasola Bologna, dating from the mid-13th century. This date refers to the palazzo; the castle’s present-day appearance was shaped by architect Ugo Tarchi.

Dottori’s Art in Two Locations

Gerardo Dottori is represented by two works of art in Monte Vibiano Vecchio. His first mural, created in 1909, is in the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in Monte Vibiano Vecchio. A fresco by Dottori in Villa Cesari Tiberi in Monte Vibiano Vecchio juxtaposes industrial architecture with a rural scene featuring a farmer. The two references to Dottori’s art have different focuses: the church is notable for Dottori’s first mural and the year it was created, while the villa connects his art with the contrast between industrial architecture and a farming scene.

Hilly Landscape and Regional Setting

Monte Vibiano sits on a hill and is surrounded by olive trees, vineyards, centuries-old woodlands, rivers and streams. The vineyards cover 22 hectares of the 350-hectare estate; these agricultural land figures may change. Winegrowing is therefore part of a broader landscape and estate that also encompasses woodland and waterways.

As part of Umbria’s regional landscape, the valley below Monte Vibiano follows the Nestore River through the rolling hills of the Colli Perugini. This hilly landscape connects Umbria’s regional capital with Marsciano.
