For a trip to Lippiano, you can choose between exploring the history of Castello di Lippiano and several hiking trails. The Castello was an old residence of the Bourbon del Monte family. Historic churches, the former Jewish quarter, and routes with named connections add to the picture. This lets you balance cultural history and excursions according to your interests.

The Castello and Historic Buildings

Castello di Lippiano is privately owned and is not normally open to visitors. Check access again before visiting. From the outside, you can see the old round bastion in Piazza Umberto I; its circular layout shapes this particular view of the Castello. Its exterior and its historic role as a residence of the Bourbon del Monte family offer two different starting points for learning about the building.

At the foot of the Castello, a quarter used as a ghetto developed between the 15th and 19th centuries. An entrance arch marked with a plaque leads to the ancient Jewish Ghetto of Lippiano. The quarter’s location and historic function go hand in hand: the area can be understood both through its connection to the castle and through its history.

Two churches also reflect different historical periods. Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie was built in 1717 by Marchese Francesco. During the 2024 FAI Spring Days, it was privately owned and usually not open to visitors; ask about current access before visiting. Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is neo-Gothic and was rebuilt after the 1917 earthquake. The churches therefore highlight two different historical points of reference: construction in 1717 and rebuilding after an earthquake.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

Sentiero 152 connects Lippiano with Sentiero 155. It runs through a forest of centuries-old chestnut trees; the view from the trail extends to Lago di Montedoglio and across the upper Tiber Valley. The route also offers the opportunity to visit the Marzano area. At a trail junction near Lippiano, it connects with the A8 loop (Citerna–Monterchi–Lippiano). These details help distinguish the trail connections: Sentiero 152 leads to another named trail, while the junction near Lippiano connects to the A8.

From the summit of Monte Paiaiolo, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. Sentiero 153 SL leads to Lippiano, at an elevation of 424 meters, and is part of the multi-day Sentiero dei Laghi, which connects Lago Trasimeno with Lago di Montedoglio. A walking time is provided for the Anello di Citerna–Monterchi–Lippiano loop; Sentiero 153 SL, by contrast, is part of a multi-day trail between the two lakes. The information therefore offers different reference points for planning your time and understanding each route.

For the trails listed, you can use the symbols to check information about accessibility and trail markings. Detailed route descriptions and GPX tracks are also available. The Marrone di Lippiano is considered a typical local chestnut variety and adds a local connection to the hiking and landscape themes.
