Vagliagli combines a strong connection to wine with traces of its medieval past and several ways to explore the landscape. The village lies in a scenic hollow offering far-reaching views. Different interests may guide your choice of stay: would you like to explore the village’s history and art, learn about winegrowing, or make time for a walking or cycling tour? Vagliagli is considered an area for producing high-quality Chianti Classico; at the same time, wine production in the area can be traced back to the Etruscan period.

Art and historic architecture

The Church of San Cristoforo is documented as far back as 1226. Inside is a 16th-century fresco from the Sienese School depicting Saint Christopher, Saint Bernardine and Saint Sebastian. Other works include a 15th-century marble baptismal font by Lorenzo di Mariano, known as Il Marrina, and a painting from the workshop of Rutilio Manetti. It depicts the Madonna in Glory with Saint Christopher and Saint Catherine of Alexandria. On the piazza beside the church are significant remains of a medieval palazzo, including a pointed-arch gateway. The church and piazza offer different historical points of interest, from religious artwork to medieval architectural forms.

Walking and cycling routes

For a hike, the trail Vigneti e boschi del Chianti is a specific option. It covers 14 kilometres through vineyards, forests and farmsteads, as well as viewpoints in the characteristic landscape of Chianti Classico. The route follows trails 330, 330A, 319, 325 and 370. Red-and-white CAI markings and descriptive information boards mark the trail. Check the markings on site, as route details may change.

A range of landscapes and destinations are also described for cycling tours. The circular route Avventura su strade bianche: da Radda a Castellina fino a Vagliagli passes through vineyards and by castles and ancient Etruscan archaeological sites, before reaching the village of Vagliagli in Castelnuovo Berardenga. The route Alla scoperta dell’Oltrarbia reaches Dievole from Vagliagli; the estate there has a dedicated MTB trail. The options described can help you decide: a circular route with castles and archaeological sites, or Dievole with its MTB trail. Check route information before setting out, as details may change.
