Celle sul Rigo brings together an unusually regular medieval town layout, historic buildings, church art, and a strong pici tradition. Visitors choosing the village as a destination can explore a range of interests: the development of the fortified Castrum Cellis, literary traces, local festivals, or the landscape along the trails. These themes give your planning a clear direction—whether you want your stay to focus mainly on local history, food, or outdoor activities.

Townscape and Historic Traces

The streets of Celle sul Rigo run parallel and at right angles to one another. This regular layout is unusual for a medieval village and has led to the theory that the settlement was laid out on the model of a Roman castrum. This interpretation remains a theory. The medieval tower in the upper part of the village is the only significant surviving part of the fortified Castrum Cellis. The development of the castrum is dated approximately from the 9th to the 16th century.

Another architectural layer is La Fattoria, added to the old walls in the 14th and 15th centuries. The building was originally the Palazzo Pretorio; the Bocchi Bianchi family later converted it into a farm. Beneath Celle sul Rigo, caves served as refuges in wartime and are now used as cellars. The cistern and its adjoining piazza were also central features of village life for a long time. References to both date back to 1610.

Church Art and Traces of Carducci

San Paolo Converso contains wall paintings depicting the “Mysteries of the Rosary,” as well as two paintings: one shows the marriage of Mary and Joseph, the other the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. The present-day church also has a 15th-century travertine portal that previously belonged to the old church of Santa Elisabetta. The paintings, wall paintings, and portal represent different aspects of local art history—from their subjects to the portal’s earlier location.

The poet Giosuè Carducci is also associated with Celle sul Rigo. He stayed in the village from 1851 to 1855 and dedicated the sonnet “Sopra Celle” to it. A plaque on a façade marks the house where he lived. Thus, literature and personal memory, alongside architectural remains, are part of the village’s history.

Pici, the Sagra, and the Palio del Cacio

The pici of Celle sul Rigo are made entirely by hand, using a technique passed down from generation to generation. The traditional sauce served with them is sugo all’aglione. It is prepared with local garlic, olive oil, chili pepper, preserved tomatoes, and very little fresh tomato.

The Sagra dei Pici takes place every year on the last weekend of May in Piazza Garibaldi. Its first edition was held in 1969; to this day, the Società Filarmonica di Celle sul Rigo continues the festival to support the local music band. Another tradition is the Palio del cacio: two or more players roll traditionally aged pecorino weighing about one kilogram through the village streets. The palio traditionally takes place on the morning of the last day of Carnival and is repeated on the second Sunday in August. Its two recurring dates therefore differ from the sagra’s annual May weekend. If you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the exact event dates before making your plans.

Trail Network and Landscape

The San Casciano Active trail network reaches Celle sul Rigo and the Via Francigena at Ponte a Rigo. The Il Rigo trail begins just outside the historic center at Piazza Risorgimento. It offers views of the Rigo stream valley and towards Radicofani; visibility may vary depending on conditions. The trail includes a crossing of the Rigo stream, which may be impassable in winter or after heavy rain. Check the signage and conditions on site before planning your route.

In the village, historic buildings and works of art take center stage, while Il Rigo offers a scenic view of the Rigo Valley and towards Radicofani. The seasonal limitation at the stream crossing is a specific factor to consider when planning. Along with the recurring festival dates, it can help you choose the focus of your stay in Celle sul Rigo to suit the time of year you travel.
