Serre Di Rapolano: Culture, Olive Oil and Routes
Accommodation in Serre Di Rapolano
In Serre Di Rapolano, a variety of travel interests come together: the history of the Grance, olive oil, historic buildings, and tours on foot or by bike. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you choose the focus of your stay. The local sights and routes offer specific ways to explore them.
Museum, Grance and Olive Oil
The Museo dell’Antica Grancia e dell’Olio di Serre di Rapolano documents the history of ancient fortified estates known as Grance. Since the 14th century, these belonged to the Sienese hospital Santa Maria della Scala. The museum thus brings together two historical reference points: the Grance as fortified estates and their association with a Sienese institution. At the oil library, visitors can taste and buy oil from the most important Sienese olive mills. This makes a clearly defined historical theme and a hands-on exploration of olive oil the focus of the same place.
Walking and Cycling Routes
The municipal Cave e Castelli cycling route is 15.5 km long, suitable for mountain bikes as well as gravel or hybrid bikes, and has a moderate to low difficulty level. It leads to the travertine quarries of Serre di Rapolano. Along one road, the route offers a striking view of the quarries.
The Via Lauretana e dintorni circular route is 7.2 km long and suitable for families and hikers with limited to moderate experience. It starts in the center of Serre, follows part of the Via Lauretana, then rejoins the Cave e Castelli route and leads back to Serre di Rapolano. By comparison, it is shorter than the Cave e Castelli cycling route; the modes of transport and the stated target groups also differ. Another cycling route, Garibaldi Gravel, leads from Serre di Rapolano along the road to the travertine quarries, where the stone is still being extracted today. Buildings and Historical Traces
Castello Gori Martini is an architectural complex of about 1,600 square meters, comprising a manor house, granary, olive mill and hanging garden. The garden is situated on the remains of the Byzantine fortress of Serre di Rapolano. The named parts point to the complex’s different functions; the garden adds a connection to the older fortress remains.
The church of Santi Lorenzo e Andrea in Serre di Rapolano preserves frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Teatrino Gori-Martini reflects a different architectural development: a building with an olive mill in the basement and a storeroom on the ground floor was converted into a performance venue. Together, these buildings take you from historic frescoes and fortress remains to the conversion of a building for performances.
Serremaggio in May
On the third weekend of May, Serremaggio in the historic center of Serre di Rapolano features an old-fashioned market, demonstrations of crafts that have disappeared, and a procession of Ciambragina and Messer de Rossi. The procession includes nobles, guards, flag-wavers and drummers; individual participants may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
