Belverde: Gardens, Church and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Belverde
Belverde offers a clear local starting point when choosing a hotel: public gardens between Via Val d’Aosta and Via Emilia, and the Chiesa del Beato Ambrogio Sansedoni, a parish church and part of the architectural heritage. Monteriggioni adds other historical highlights: medieval church architecture, fortress history and archaeology. Choosing Belverde lets you consider local points of interest separately from the themes found in Monteriggioni.
Belverde: Gardens, Church and Orientation
Belverde’s public gardens lie between Via Val d’Aosta and Via Emilia. Their location between the two streets provides a specific local landmark. The Chiesa del Beato Ambrogio Sansedoni is a parish church and is considered part of the architectural heritage. Its parish function and its classification as architectural heritage offer two perspectives on the building: its religious role and its architectural significance. The gardens and church architecture therefore offer distinct local interests to consider when choosing a theme.
The Casa dell’Acqua is located on Via Sardegna, opposite the church in Belverde. The municipality announced the facility in 2018. If you would like to include it in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently available for use.
Church and Fortress History in Monteriggioni
The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta in Monteriggioni was built in the 13th century; its façade is original and also dates from that century. The Castello di Monteriggioni is associated with a different historical context: the Republic of Siena founded the fortress in the second decade of the 13th century as a defensive outpost against Florence. The Castello preserves a town wall about 570 metres long and 14 towers. These are two medieval structures with distinct points of emphasis: the Pieve’s construction date and original façade, and the Castello’s founding, defensive purpose and fortifications.
Fortress, Weapons and Archaeological Finds
The educational trail “Monteriggioni in Arme” explores the history of the fortress across four rooms. It features faithful replicas of medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour, as well as models of historical siege equipment and techniques. Some weapons and pieces of armour can be handled and tried on. The trail thus complements architectural history with an engaging presentation of military equipment and siege techniques. If you are choosing between these themes, the objects and techniques of fortress history take centre stage here, while the Pieve and Castello are presented in terms of their architectural history and function.
The MaM – Museo Archeologico di Monteriggioni is located in the former monastic complex of Abbadia Isola. The complex was founded in 1001 along the Via Francigena. The museum displays finds from the area dating to prehistoric, Etruscan, Roman and medieval times. It therefore offers an archaeological perspective spanning several periods, while the educational trail focuses specifically on the fortress’s history and military technology. The specific items on display may change. If you are planning a visit to the MaM, check the opening information in advance.
