Torrenieri: Via Francigena, Art and Railway Heritage
Accommodation in Torrenieri
When choosing Torrenieri as a destination, the different reasons for staying there can help guide your decision: a route through the town, art in religious and public spaces, and railway history each offer a distinct focus. This lets you choose the focus that suits your travel plans without conflating these topics.
Via Francigena and historic routes
The Via Francigena runs through the centre of Torrenieri and leads into the Parco della Valdorcia. In Sigeric's itinerary, Torrenieri is the 13th stop. These two connections place the town in different contexts: one describes the route through the town centre and into the park, while the other marks Torrenieri's place on Sigeric's itinerary. Torrenieri also lies along the Via Cassia, which once formed a road and railway junction there. Thus, the Via Cassia is associated with a former transport function of the town, while the Via Francigena describes the route through the centre and onward into the park.
Art and local tradition
The painted wooden sculpture “Madonna col Bambino in trono” by Domenico di Niccolò dei Cori is in the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena. It is dated to the second or third decade of the 15th century. The church complex also includes the 16th-century Oratorio della Compagnia di San Rocco. The different dates provide a simple way to place the sculpture and oratory in art-historical context: one work is dated to the early 15th century, while the other is from the 16th century.
The Murales di Renzo Regoli is on the retaining wall beside Torrenieri's stadium, on the side facing Via Pascoli. Together with the sculpture in the church, the mural offers another artistic connection to the town, this time in a public space. Torrenieri also celebrates the traditional Festa Patronale di Santa Maria Maddalena. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the dates for your chosen period.
Railway history and Treno Natura
Torrenieri railway station opened on 14 May 1865 as the terminus of the Asciano–Torrenieri railway line. A separate aspect of the railway's history concerns the Asciano–Monte Antico line: it is closed to regular traffic, and historic Treno Natura trains return along it to Torrenieri station. The operating dates vary. If a trip on a historic train is part of your plans, check the relevant dates before planning your journey around it.
Eroica cycling route and motorhome stopover
The Eroica cycling route is accessible near Torrenieri, about 3 km away in the direction of San Quirico along the old route of the Via Cassia. The route follows the turnoff to Cosona and the brown Eroica signs; check the signage on site. You can use the approximate distance together with the route description to plan your journey without confusing the cycling route with the Via Francigena through the town centre.
For motorhome travellers, there is a large, equipped stopover area in the car park at the railway station. The station car park on Via Bindo Crocchi has a WC, wash and disposal point, a drinking-water fountain, and a fountain with non-potable water for washing. The area is lit and paved, and is also suitable for overnight stays. As local service details may change, check the information before setting off.
