Chianciano Terme: Thermal Parks, History and Routes
Accommodation in Chianciano Terme
Chianciano Terme combines thermal offerings with a historic center, named routes and local specialties. Taking a look at these different highlights can help you plan your trip around whether you want to focus on wellness, local history, landscapes or culinary traditions.
Thermal Parks and Wellness Experiences
The Terme di Chianciano thermal complex includes the Fucoli and Acqua Santa thermal parks. Parco Fucoli offers bathing in thermal water outdoors and mud therapy. Terme Sensoriali offers 20 different wellness experiences, including relaxation pools, aromatherapy, chromotherapy, music therapy, a calidarium, a Turkish bath and experience showers. Their focus differs: Fucoli centers on outdoor thermal water and mud therapy, while Terme Sensoriali offers a diverse range of experiences and facilities. Individual services may vary; individual facilities at Terme Sensoriali may change.
Historic Sites in the Center
The Museo Civico Archeologico delle Acque di Chianciano Terme is located in the heart of the historic center, in a former 19th-century granary. It houses the world's most important collection of Etruscan canopic jars, urns for ashes shaped like human figures. The museum thus brings together the building's former purpose and a distinctive archaeological collection. The historic center is also home to Castello dei Conti Manenti, also known as il Monastero, and Torre dell’Orologio.
Routes with Different Distance Details
The Sentieri di Chianciano consist of three short, interconnected routes that allow visitors to the thermal center to explore the countryside around Chianciano. They include the Sentieri della Nonna, the Sentiero del Bosco and the Sentiero della Poesia. Together, they are just over 13 km long and have an elevation gain of 373 m; their elevation ranges from 450 to 580 m. An MTB must be used on these trails.
The Percorso delle acque in Chianciano Terme, designated as 24E6, leads to the sites of the famous thermal waters. It is 7.4 km long, has an elevation gain of 239 m and reaches a maximum elevation of 686 m. At 7.4 km, this individual route is shorter than the three Sentieri combined. The Percorso is suitable for everyone; using an MTB is recommended. In contrast, an MTB must be used on the Sentieri.
Landscape Between Two Towns
The Pietraporciana nature reserve is located on the 847 m-high ridge between Chianciano Terme and Sarteano. It complements the historic center's attractions with a landscape connecting the two towns.
Olive Oil and Local Pastry Traditions
Frantoio La Macina hosts food tastings featuring typical products, with extra virgin olive oil at the center. You may need to contact them in advance to arrange a tasting. You can also visit a 16th-century wooden olive press and a distinctive collection of historical objects there. Torta di Chianciano Marabissi is also part of the local food culture: Chianciano residents and holidaymakers enjoy it, and it has been a mainstay of the local pastry tradition for more than half a century. At the Frantoio, the focus is on tastings and artisanal heritage; the Torta represents a long-standing pastry tradition.
