Vivo D'orcia offers several clear themes for planning a trip: local history and architecture, historic water power, and forests and springs. The individual buildings and trails each have a different focus—from the history of the Eremo’s founding to finding your way along the Torrente Vivo.

Monastic history and Palazzo Cervini

The Eremo was built on the ruins of a Camaldolese monastery founded by San Romualdo. Its connection to the founder describes the town’s monastic past. Palazzo Cervini, by contrast, is notable for its architectural history: it was remodelled based on a design by the Florentine architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. A stone bridge leads to the palazzo, with the Torrente Vivo flowing beneath it. Two different historical connections therefore stand side by side: the founding of a monastery and the remodelling of a palazzo based on an architect’s design.

Ermicciolo and the church’s architectural form

The small Oratory of San Benedetto, also known as Ermicciolo, lies near the springs along the trail. The church has simple Romanesque architecture, a single nave and a semicircular apse. A single-nave building has one main space; the semicircular apse forms its distinctive end. The single nave forms the main space; the semicircular apse closes it off. A few steps from the church are the facilities of old chestnut-drying sheds. Sacred architecture and the historic drying of chestnuts meet here as distinct themes.

Trails along the water

The Anello dell’Ermicciolo e Capovetra is a roughly ten-kilometre walking trail in Parco del Vivo. It can start in the Borgo of Vivo D'orcia or at a designated car park on the road to Seggiano; the car park is about one kilometre from the town centre. If you choose this car park as your starting point, check the local parking conditions before setting off. Along the way, the Anello passes the ruins of an old water-powered sawmill and the water channels of the “Gorina”.

The Sentiero dell’acqua has a different point of reference: it starts in the centre and follows the Torrente Vivo towards Ermicciolo. Along it are traces of historic water-powered sawmills, ironworks and mills. The trails can be distinguished by the specific features mentioned: for the Anello, its length and two possible starting points; for the Sentiero, its route alongside the stream towards Ermicciolo. Both lead to traces of past water use.

Springs and woodland

One of Monte Amiata’s two springs lies in Parco dell’Ermicciolo in Vivo D'orcia. From the square, visitors can enter a gallery just over 80 metres long, where they can come into direct contact with water emerging from the rock. Check local conditions before entering. The gallery adds an encounter with water in the rock to the theme of the springs.

At the edge of the town centre, a woodland area along the Torrente Vivo is home to silver firs (Abies alba), one of the few remaining native stands of this species in Tuscany. Faggeta a Vivo d’Orcia also has numerous centuries-old trees. The “Faggione” is a tree more than a hundred years old, standing at the roadside along the road from Vivo to Rifugio di Capo Vetra. The information thus ranges from a woodland area with its distinctive tree species to an individually named tree beside a road.

Exhibition and local tradition

The exhibition at Museo dell’Acqua includes photographs, projections, multimedia panels, exhibits and materials used to maintain the aqueduct. Images and projections are displayed alongside practical materials from work on the aqueduct. This gives the theme of water its own museum perspective, alongside the trails and buildings.

The Palio del Boscaiolo is a skills competition inspired by the traditional occupation of woodcutting. It takes place in the medieval Borgo dell’Eremo. This adds a cultural perspective on working with wood to the natural and woodland landscape.
