Castellina In Chianti lies among gentle hills with the characteristic landscapes of the Chianti region. In the historic center, traces of its history of fortifications meet a covered passageway; elsewhere in the municipality, Etruscan burial sites, churches and protected nature take center stage. When choosing a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether views, archaeology, architectural history or landscape should be the focus of your trip.

Views and routes in the historic center

From the top of the Rocca tower, the view stretches across Castellina and the surrounding area, from Siena to Volterra and from the Casentino mountains to Montemaggio. An outdoor circular path runs along the walls of Via delle Volte. Between the open countryside and the town center, it offers panoramic views to the east toward Radda and Gaiole. Via delle Volte itself is a covered pedestrian passageway in the historic center, so the views from the path along the walls and the passage through the town can be experienced separately.

The Rocca di Castellina In Chianti was designed by Giuliano da Sangallo in the second half of the 15th century. The Museo Archeologico del Chianti is located in the historic center, inside a 15th-century Florentine fortification. Access to the Rocca is on ground level through the museum. An elevator goes up to the first floor; the levels above it are accessible only by stairs.

The Rocca and archaeological museum

The collections of the Museo Archeologico del Chianti include finds from the archaeological sites of Montecalvario and Poggino di Fonterutoli. Some of the finds from the Poggino tombs are displayed in the atrium of the medieval Rocca. The museum's educational program is aimed at children, young people, families and adults. Guided tours are tailored to suit demand; individual workshops may vary.

A special exhibit is the reconstruction of the Montecalvario chariot: a light, two-wheeled currus with iron wheels, each with nine spokes. Bronze and iron plates form its decoration. The object brings a specific part of the archaeological collection to life and complements the finds from the two excavation sites with a reconstructed vehicle.

Etruscan burial sites and access information

The Etruscan tomb of Montecalvario is just a short walk from the historic center. It has four burial chambers facing north, south, east and west. Each chamber consists of a main chamber and side cells. The terrain is rough and the site is not suitable for children or people with disabilities.

The Poggino necropolis lies near the village of Fonterutoli in a small grove. From Castellina, it can be reached via the SS 222 Chiantigiana state road toward Siena. The archaeological site is in the forest and contains five burials: four chamber tombs and one cist grave. It is freely accessible; check local conditions before your visit. Some of the objects found there are on display in the Rocca atrium.

The Romanesque church of San Lorenzo stands in Tregole. It can only be reached by stairs; there is no ramp for people with disabilities or side entrance. The church of San Salvatore is also part of the town's architectural history: after its destruction in the Second World War, it was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style.

The Chianti landscape and nature reserve

In Località Sant’Agnese in Castellina In Chianti, the Riserva Naturale Senese Bosco di Sant’Agnese nature reserve protects an extensive cypress grove. Its origins date back about ten centuries. The area provides roosting places for small birds and is home to nocturnal birds of prey and mammals such as porcupines, martens and weasels.

Historic route, festivals and tastings

The Via Romea Sanese pilgrimage route from Florence to Siena passes through Castellina In Chianti as a historic stopover. Festivals also contribute to local history: the Fiera del Cocomero is an August festival of rural origins that was already being held in the postwar period. Specific dates and programs may vary from year to year.

Calici di Stelle takes place in summer around August 10 and combines food and wine tastings with stargazing. If you are planning to visit in a particular year, check the event dates in advance. Visitors can go to local wine shops or cellars for wine tastings; cured meats from the Cinta Senese breed are often served with them. Since individual businesses and their availability may change, it is best to check ahead before visiting.
