Gavedo lies on a natural terrace on the slopes of Mount La Nuda. Two very different themes are central to planning your trip: the town’s building history and mountain biking. This will help you decide whether to consider Gavedo mainly for its historic buildings or as a destination for a challenging bike ride.

Mountain Biking on the Mulazzo MTB Adventure

The Mulazzo MTB Adventure is 34 kilometres long and is rated as challenging both physically and technically. Along the route, the view stretches from the watershed to the Golfo dei Poeti. Its length, difficulty and views give you concrete points of reference when deciding how to fit the ride into your travel plans.

The Lunigiana Bike Area offers signposted, well-maintained MTB trails in the municipality of Mulazzo, leading to the hamlets of Gavedo and Terceretoli. This also makes Gavedo interesting for travellers who want to include cycling in their time here. The Mulazzo MTB Adventure combines a distinct sporting profile with sweeping views across the landscape.

Church and Art in Gavedo

The Chiesa dei Santi Lorenzo e Donnino stands in Gavedo, which was historically the main centre of the fiefdom of Groppoli. The Marquises Brignole-Sale commissioned the present-day church to a design by the Genoese architect Matteo Vinzoni; it was completed in 1736. Its façade is neoclassical and austere in design. A central circular window is set in the upper section. Inside, the church is vaulted and decorated with frescoes.

The two side altars also offer concrete points of reference for the church’s art history. The left side altar holds the Ligurian oil painting “Madonna con Bambino, Angeli e Santi” from the early 18th century. The Ligurian oil painting “Transito di San Giuseppe” from the first half of the 18th century is associated with the right side altar. As the placement of artworks may change, check the current altar arrangement before visiting.

The building history extends beyond the church: the medieval Castello di Gavedo is an imposing square structure in an elevated position. An archived view from 1727 shows the Castello above the Geriola watercourse. A view from the same year shows Palazzo Brignole-Sale on Gavedo’s terrace. The two images offer different insights into the town’s historic appearance.

Palazzo Brignole-Sale and Its Architecture

Palazzo Brignole-Sale dates from the 17th century and was renovated by Matteo Vinzoni in the 18th century. Its park lies opposite the Chiesa dei Santi Lorenzo e Donnino. The building also has a cellar located well below ground level and a massive perimeter wall with four corner towers. These details describe different aspects of the complex: its position in relation to the church, the cellar and the defensive wall.

Historically, a double-curved ramp at the bridge over the moat connected Palazzo Brignole-Sale to its piano nobile. Together with the wall and corner towers, it is one of the building’s architectural features.

If you are looking for a hotel in Gavedo, you can plan your stay around whichever focus better suits your trip: the 34-kilometre MTB route offers a clear sporting focus, while the church, Castello and Palazzo bring the town’s architectural and local history to the fore. This makes it possible to assess Gavedo as a destination based on your specific interests.
