Carignano: Historic Lanes and Church Art
Accommodation in Carignano
Carignano combines historic village architecture, religious art, and an old route to Canepari. For travelers interested in architectural history and townscapes, several features can be found side by side: covered lanes, dated architectural elements, the Church of the Nativity of Mary, and a partly paved mule track. The village can therefore be understood both through individual details and through its connections by road.
Lanes, Squares, and Architectural History
The oldest part of Carignano includes covered sections of lanes with portals dating from the late Middle Ages and early modern period. Thus, the historic layout of the lanes is itself part of the village’s character, not just a single building. A marble portal from 1669 and a sandstone window lintel bearing an inscription dated 1557 provide two precise markers in time. The inscription is older than the portal, placing two details from different centuries side by side.
The village square is characterized by noteworthy buildings and numerous Maestà. Together with the lanes, they create a townscape where buildings and religious symbols stand side by side. The square adds another dimension of village structure to the view of individual façades and inscriptions.
Church of the Nativity of Mary
At the entrance to the village stands the church dedicated to the Nativity of Mary. Its interior furnishings date entirely from the 20th century and include frescoes. One notable, precisely dated feature is the wooden choir, which dates from 1911. The church therefore brings together furnishings from the 20th century and a feature with a precise date.
An inscription in the church commemorates the construction of a small shrine in 1532 by Giovanni Andrea Santi dei Cargiolli of Ponzanello. The difference in date highlights the distinct historical reference points: the inscription refers to the 16th century, while the furnishings belong entirely to the 20th century. The church can therefore be understood both through its design and through its older inscription.
Historic Routes and Getting There
Carignano lies on an old route that connected the episcopal estates of Ponzanello with the bishop’s seat in Sarzana. This places the historical perspective beyond the village itself, linking two places shaped by the Church.
Another path leads from Carignano to Canepari: the old mule track is partly paved, and walking conditions may vary. There is a fountain along the path. A small bridge crosses the stream that runs beside the path; an old washhouse is also still clearly visible next to it. The fountain, bridge, and washhouse give the route distinct associations with water, crossing, and historic architecture. This route is therefore different in character from the church and square landmarks in the village.
Carignano can be reached from Fosdinovo via Giucano or Canepari. From Sarzana, follow Via dei Mulini to reach the village. Choose the route that suits your starting point and check road conditions before setting off.
The former cemetery grounds outside the Church of the Nativity of Mary are now used as a playground. Facilities may change; if this place is important to your plans, we recommend checking the current situation on site.
