Gello: History, the Piglione Trail and events
Accommodation in Gello
There are three distinct ways to plan a stay in Gello: its early written mention and archaeological finds, sections of the Piglione Trail, and food events with specific dates. These topics appeal to different interests. A historical reference, a route description and an event programme each offer different information to help you plan.
History: written mention and finds
Gello is first mentioned by name in a document from 898. The year indicates when it was mentioned in writing, not necessarily when it was founded. Ligurian-Etruscan artefacts have also been discovered in Gello. The written record and the archaeological finds offer different ways to explore the area’s history: the first gives the year in which the name was recorded, while the second concerns the classification of the artefacts discovered. If you are interested in Gello’s past, you can consider both perspectives separately.
Two sections of the Piglione Trail
The Piglione Trail can be explored through two distinct sections. One leads from the road to Foci di Gello to Gello along a path through chestnut trees. The other runs from Cavina di Gello to Foci di Gello via an uphill mule track. The named endpoints and route features are especially useful for finding your way: the first description highlights Gello and the path through chestnut trees, while the second highlights Foci di Gello and the climb along a mule track. Compare the starting and ending points when deciding which section suits your planned hike. The route descriptions are from the organiser’s 2023 roadbook. Exact route details may vary between editions, so plan using the edition you have.
Food events with specific dates
The third food walk through Gello, held on 14 December 2025, featured craft markets; local products and delicacies were also available. At the third Mondinata, on 10 November 2024, Mondine and Vin Brulé accompanied the event. A free shuttle service was offered for this Mondinata. The editions described differ both in date and in the programme items mentioned. If an event date is important to your trip, check the date of the edition you plan to attend in advance. This lets you plan your trip around a specific date instead of assuming that an event will take place during your stay.
Planning your stay in Gello
The historical information offers a different point of reference from the routes, while the event details relate to specific editions and dates. When searching for a hotel in Gello, you can use this distinction to clarify the purpose of your trip. Then check the specific details of each hotel offer and choose one that suits your personal requirements.
