There are several specific ways to get to know Gualdo: through its preserved medieval village layout, a restored section of the Via Francigena and the Acqua Bona spring. There are also two events held in August. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: local history, hiking, a visit to the spring or a seasonal cultural programme.

A medieval village and its history

Gualdo preserves an intact medieval village layout. Almost all the houses are built of stone and have small doors and windows. These recurring features make the architecture a useful starting point for exploring the village’s appearance.

Historical accounts link the origins of Gualdo to the construction of a church and a new village on the site of the Fattoria di Vinolupo. Gualdo’s first statute dates from 1266 and is considered the first major affirmation of municipal institutions throughout the Lucchese area. The two references relate to different things: the historical accounts concern the origins and construction, while the statute concerns municipal institutions. If you want to place Gualdo in its historical context, keep this distinction in mind rather than merging the two into a single founding story.

The Via Francigena and Acqua Bona

A restored section of the Via Francigena runs from Purgatorio through Gualdo to Valpromaro. For hikers, this provides a clearly identified route that places Gualdo between two named locations.

Acqua Bona is located on Via vicinale di Curiccio in Gualdo and is one of the springs linked by the “Strada delle sorgenti.” A path about 400 metres long leads to the spring from a car park below the church of Gualdo. These route details answer different planning questions: the Via Francigena describes a route between places, while the 400-metre distance refers to access from the car park to the spring itself. If you plan to use the car park, check current parking availability before your visit.

August events in Gualdo

The “Il Paese delle Fiabe” event takes place in Gualdo in August; the “Festa delle Fate” is also held there in August.

At one edition of “Il Paese delle Fiabe,” the streets and squares of Gualdo hosted children’s workshops, street performers, storytelling, costumed performances, and magic and bubble shows. The children’s workshops offer a specific point of reference for families looking for an explicitly child-focused activity.

At one edition, Gualdo’s ovens baked sweet treats, pizzas and focaccias with typical local cheeses and cured meats. This culinary aspect adds regional ingredients to the event’s street and cultural programme.
