Discover Santa Maria Del Giudice
Accommodation in Santa Maria Del Giudice
Santa Maria Del Giudice can be explored through a variety of interests: medieval churches, trails on Monte Pisano, and the local Zuppa Paesana tradition. When planning your trip, these themes can offer different points of focus: architectural history, landscapes, and a food culture that is also linked to a festival. You can tailor your stay according to whether you are more interested in historic architectural styles, a described route, or the culinary custom.
Churches and architectural history
The present-day building of Pieve Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 12th century. For Pieve San Giovanni Battista, however, the date refers to its present form: it dates from the second half of the 12th century. Pieve San Giovanni Battista is also considered an important example of Pisan-Lucca Romanesque architecture. The two dates therefore do not mean exactly the same thing: the building is dated for Santa Maria Assunta, while for San Giovanni Battista it is its present form. This distinction helps compare the architectural histories of the two churches.
The Eremo di San Giorgio della Spelonca offers a different historical perspective. It was founded in 1190 by the “black hermits” and is a small medieval church with a single nave. Single-nave means that the church has one main nave. The church was rebuilt several times up to the 19th century. The 1190 foundation and the later alterations therefore describe different periods in its history. The Eremo can be reached on foot from the pass.
Trails and landscapes
In the 2025/26 program, the Anello di Santa Maria del Giudice was described as an 8 km route on Monte Pisano and rated moderate. Check conditions before setting out on a hike. Its length and difficulty provide a way to assess the Anello.
The route from Santa Maria del Giudice to the Eremo della Spelonca, described in the Lucca-Trek 2025/26 program, passes through olive groves, garrigue, and a holm oak forest. These landscape features shape the route description. By comparison, the Anello is characterized by its length and rating: the two route descriptions thus differ in the features most useful for planning each one.
Another Lucca-Trek route in 2025 ran from Santa Maria del Giudice to the archaeological site of Monte Cotrozzi and through lush Mediterranean maquis. The hike was part of the Lucca-Trek 2025 program. Sentiero 00, in turn, leads from the village along a small, winding, easily walked road to the pass at Moriglion di Penna. The described routes also differ in their landscapes and destinations: from olive groves and holm oak forest to Mediterranean maquis and a pass at Moriglion di Penna.
Zuppa Paesana and the festival tradition
Santa Maria del Giudice’s Zuppa Paesana is part of the local food culture. Wild herbs from Monte Penna are considered a fundamental ingredient in this soup tradition. Zuppa Paesana is also linked to an annual festival held in August, which began in 1973. The ingredients and the festival have different connections to the tradition: the wild herbs shape the soup, while August marks the recurring festival period. If the festival is important to your trip, check the specific dates in advance.
