Magliano lies at the foot of Monte Tea, between the sources of the Aulella and Serchio di Soraggio rivers. This mountain hamlet combines its scenic setting with a history spanning medieval traces and sacred art. When choosing a place to stay, you can therefore consider both hiking routes and the history of the village.

Village character and historical traces

Narrow cobbled lanes, closely packed houses, and sandstone portals shape the village’s character. These features give Magliano the feel of a mountain hamlet. A will dated 793 is the earliest evidence of the village. A fortress stood in the upper part of Magliano during the Middle Ages: the early written record and the later fortress are two distinct historical points of reference.

Sacred art and remembrance

The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo brings together works of art from different centuries. The church preserves a wooden altarpiece from the 14th century and several relics of saints. The vault painting, dated 1739, is by Giuseppe Morelli of Gragnola and depicts the martyrdom of Saint Andrew. The altarpiece and the painting come from different periods; the artist, place of origin, and subject of the painting are also specified.

Another part of the village’s history is reflected in the Monumento ai Caduti. It commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars, as well as civilian victims of the Second World War. The memorial therefore honors those who fell in both wars, along with a specifically identified group of civilian victims from the Second World War.

Hikes and different routes

PasseggianMangiando was held for the fifth time in 2025; the sixth edition took place on 14 June 2026. The two editions offer a concrete comparison of the routes: in 2025, the loop was about 17 kilometers long and started and finished in Magliano. The 2026 hike followed a loop of about 13 kilometers, starting and finishing at the Colonia di Magliano. The approximate distances differ by around four kilometers, and the start and finish points were also in different locations.

The 2025 route passed the old Mulino di Magliano. The 2026 hike had six refreshment stops; the route led, among other places, to the Oratorio della Madonna di Loreto. These details refer to the respective editions. They help distinguish the two past events by route length, starting point, and the named stops along the way.

In addition to the event routes, other trails pass through or lead to Magliano. The Monte Tondo route passes the Mulino di Magliano. The former mill building has been converted into a residential house. On the Argegna e Tea route, a descent to the left leads to Magliano in about ten minutes. The two routes offer different points of reference: the mill building on Monte Tondo, and the direction and approximate duration of the descent on Argegna e Tea.

Those who consider hiking and local history together can distinguish between different points of interest: on the one hand, the specific details of past PasseggianMangiando editions, and on the other, the Monte Tondo and Argegna e Tea trails. These are complemented by the medieval fortress, the artworks in Sant’Andrea, and the memorial at the Monumento ai Caduti. Magliano brings these themes together in a mountain hamlet whose setting, village character, and historical landmarks offer a distinctive guide for planning your trip.
