Gragnanella between village history and crucifix tradition
Accommodation in Gragnanella
Gragnanella lies in the Apuan Alps in the Garfagnana and belongs to the municipality of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Two distinct themes are central to planning your trip: the old village with its church and crucifix traditions, and Lago di Pontecosi as a landscape and nature destination. This allows you to assess the area according to your interests in culture, religious history and the lakeside setting.
The village and Lago di Pontecosi
The area of the hamlet of Gragnanella extends to the shores of Lago di Pontecosi; the lake is in the municipality of Pieve Fosciana. Near Gragnanella is the hydroelectric reservoir created on the River Serchio. It is used by overwintering waterbirds, including coots and various species of wild duck. This makes the lake relevant not only as a waterside landscape but also as a winter destination for bird enthusiasts. There are picnic areas and fishing spots by the lake; a large, well-equipped green space lies on the opposite shore.
The old village of Gragnanella sits on a hill and has the layout of a small fortress. Its numerous entrances are bounded by arches and portals. Together, these features shape the historic character of the village: its hillside setting, fortress-like layout and entrances framed by arches and portals. Gragnanella once also had a castle, which is now in ruins.
Church, crucifix and remembrance
At the centre stands the parish church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. The church houses a wooden crucifix dating from the 17th century; the Gragnanella crucifix is made of wild willow wood and was crafted in the Baroque period. Its material and period add an art-historical perspective to the work’s religious significance.
A plaque on the church façade commemorates six men from Gragnanella who fell in the First World War. It was installed on 17 August 1919. The church and plaque bring religious tradition and remembrance of the fallen together in one place.
The ten-year tradition
The Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix is celebrated in Gragnanella every ten years. The wooden crucifix kept in the Church of San Bartolomeo is moved and placed on a throne for the festivities once every ten years. The procession stems from a decision made by the local community in 1985. The crucifix was carried through the village in gratitude for having survived the dangers of the Second World War. Since the celebration takes place every ten years, check specific dates before your trip.
Hikes and a local event
The hikes also follow different routes. One guided hike went from the historic centre of Castelnuovo via Buggina and the Sentiero dell’Ariosto, through Antisciana and on to Gragnanella. Another led from Gragnanella along an old mule track to Pontecosi. This second hike’s circular route was about 10 km long and was described as easy and suitable for everyone. The two routes therefore differ, among other things, in their stated starting and finishing points.
“Pizza in Piazza” is also part of the local events calendar. The Circolo Anspi organises this traditional event to raise funds for Telethon. If you would like to combine your trip with an event, check specific dates before making plans.
