Cardoso offers a variety of ways to explore the area’s natural surroundings and local history. Highlights include a basin dominated by chestnut forest, hiking trails with distinctive destinations, and historic buildings and traditions. You can choose places and trails according to the views, route and cultural interests they offer.

Chestnut Forest and Mountain Views

The basin of Cardoso is dominated by chestnut forest, with stands that are mostly relatively pure. The circular trails offer different views: the Cardoso–Orzale–San Leonardo circular trail looks out towards Monte Forato and Monte Procinto. The Cardoso Casalina–Monte Forato circular trail offers views of the Foro and the Panie; from Casa Puccio, the view stretches to Procinto and Nona. Another viewpoint is the Santuario di San Leonardo: from there, you can see the Nona, Procinto and Matanna group, as well as Pania della Croce.

Trails and Directions

A hiking trail to the Trogna rock carvings and the Santuario di San Leonardo starts in Cardoso. From the junction for the sanctuary, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the rock carvings. This time estimate applies to the section from the junction, not to the entire hike from Cardoso. From Trogna, the trail continues to Orzale and returns to the starting point as a circular route. The road from Casalina leads to the starting points of the trails to Monte Forato and the Santuario di San Leonardo. Check current road and trail conditions before setting out.

Buildings and Local History

A bridge dating from the second half of the 14th century stands in the hamlet of Pontaccio in Cardoso. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cardoso dates from the 18th century. Casa Colleoni is an old alpine pasture building in Cardoso, mentioned as early as the 18th century. Today, it houses the ethnographic museum “Museo dell'Alpeggio e dell'identità apuana”. The bridge, church and alpine pasture building represent different chapters in local history: architectural heritage, religious heritage and alpine pastoralism.

The occurrence of Pietra del Cardoso also has a regional connection: it is found in a deposit in the municipality of Stazzema, extending across the hamlets of Pruno, Cardoso, Stazzema, Mulina and Pomezzana. The name therefore refers to a geographic area that extends beyond Cardoso.

Culture and Traditions

The graphic art exhibition “Fra le rossastre nubi – stormi di uccelli neri… L’ambiente contadino versiliese di fine ’800 nella grafica di Filadelfo Simi” opened at the Palazzo della Cultura in Cardoso in 2025. It featured around fifty graphic works by the artist Filadelfo Simi. The title refers to rural life in Versilia at the end of the 19th century and its depiction in graphic art.

The Festa delle Rose is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. The game of bocce takes place on Easter morning. If you would like to include one of these traditions in your travel plans, check the dates and programme for your chosen year of travel.
