The historic village of Colle di Compito grew from several small settlements at the foot of the slopes of the Monti Pisani. Its history spans olive processing, religious sites, and the surrounding landscapes. For your stay, you can therefore distinguish between two main focuses: cultural history in the village and nature trails by Lago della Gherardesca. If you are looking for a hotel in Colle di Compito, this selection can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Mill History at the Le Macine Cultural Center

The Le Macine Cultural Center is located in a former olive oil mill on Via del Molino; the building was extensively restored for cultural use. The center preserves three millstones and a frollo, a system for decanting olive oil using basins. The millstones point to the processing of olives, while the frollo illustrates another stage in olive oil production. At the event dedicated to the camellia, visitors can learn about the area’s history and traditions there, especially rural culture, olive pressing, and traditional crafts. In this way, Le Macine brings together preserved milling technology and themes from rural life.

Religious Sites and a Green Space

The religious sites can be distinguished by their function: Santa Maria Assunta is the parish church of Colle di Compito, while the Oratorio di Santissima Maria della Consolazione is a side oratory. These two roles complement the former olive oil mill’s contribution with another cultural and historical perspective. Parco della Rimembranza is designated as a green space with seating and street furniture for visitors; there is no children’s playground there.

Wetland and Paths by Lago della Gherardesca

The Area naturale Gherardesca is located near Colle di Compito. It covers about 30 hectares and has again been designated as a Special Protection Area for the protection of waterbirds. Along the shore of Lago della Gherardesca, you can follow paths on foot or by bicycle; they offer views of Colle di Compito and other villages in the Compitese area. The protected area and the lakeside paths have different focuses: one centers on protecting waterbirds, while the other offers a chance to get around by the lake and enjoy views of several villages.

The Route to Ruota

The Colle di Compito–Ruota route provides another point of reference. Described in December 2021, the route begins at the Oratorio di Maria Santissima della Consolazione and follows Via della Ruga and Via di Ruota to the start of CAI Trail 138. Check trail conditions locally. Unlike the lakeside paths, the reference points here are the starting point, the named streets, and access to the CAI trail; the paths by the lake are associated with walking or cycling and the views.
