Marginone offers three different points of interest to help you plan your trip: green spaces in Parco Francesca Pieretti, church history at Santa Maria ad Martyres, and a cycling route between two localities. Santa Maria ad Martyres is Marginone’s parish church and is located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

Green spaces for spending time outdoors

Parco Francesca Pieretti offers green spaces for walks, picnics and outdoor activities. It is a practical point of reference if you would like to make time for nature during your trip. The activities mentioned range from exercise to taking a break: a walk offers a different experience from a picnic, but both take place in the park’s green spaces. For planning purposes, this provides a clear contrast with the church’s historical and cultural themes.

Church history and art

Santa Maria ad Martyres is located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in Marginone. The church was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This dates its construction to around 1600. It is a historical point of reference for Marginone; art and a chapel add specific religious themes to this historical context.

Associated with Santa Maria ad Martyres are a painting of the Madonna and Child from the Giotto school, and a wooden sculpture of Saint Job. The works represent different forms of sacred art: a painted depiction of mother and child, and a wooden sculpture. On 28 May 2004, a chapel in honour of Saint Josemaría was inaugurated at Santa Maria ad Martyres. This date is considerably later than the church’s construction period and marks a distinct moment in the site’s history.

Cycling route between Turchetto and Marginone

The Turchetto–Marginone cycling route connects Turchetto, a locality in the municipality of Montecarlo, with Marginone, a locality in the municipality of Altopascio. The route therefore links localities belonging to two different municipalities. This is a different way to explore the area from taking a walk in the park: the focus here is on travelling between two named places. Check local conditions before cycling.

The pastry of the Sagra del Cencio

Marginone once held a Sagra del Cencio, a festival celebrating “Cencio”, a pastry traditionally associated with Carnival. This sweet pastry originates in Romagna and is also known as “chiacchiera”. For the Sagra, it was moved to the summer season. This seasonal shift marks a clear distinction: Cencio is associated with Carnival, while the festival featured the pastry in a summer setting. If you are planning your trip around a possible visit to the festival, check the event dates; the programme may change.
