San Quirico: Church Art and the History of Vitozza
Accommodation in San Quirico
San Quirico brings together sacred art, the history of the archaeological site of Vitozza, and the precisely dated development of the parish. If you are looking for a hotel for a cultural and historical stay, you can explore several distinct themes here: church architecture and religious art, the remains of Vitozza, and the development of local history. The dates span from the earliest records of the site to the establishment of the parish in the 18th century.
Church Architecture and Sacred Art
The parish church of Santi Quirico e Giulitta has a neoclassical appearance. Its façade features a travertine portal. The church’s collection also includes a terracotta work attributed to the Robbiana school, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. The building and artwork thus offer two distinct cultural and historical points of interest: the style of the building and the art-historical classification of a religious subject.
Vitozza: Archaeological Traces and Historical Timeline
Vitozza, the “City of Stone,” is an archaeological site preserving the remains of several fortifications and churches. The earliest records of Vitozza date back to the 11th century. This is distinct from the history of San Quirico’s origins, which are linked to the end of the cave settlement of Vitozza around the middle of the 15th century. The dates therefore mark different historical points: early records of Vitozza and a later connection to the origins of San Quirico.
Vitozza’s connection with the Vie Cave is also relevant to understanding the site. This connection has archaeological, geomorphological, natural and landscape value. The area of Vitozza near San Quirico is part of the Città del Tufo Archaeological Park. The name San Quirico probably comes from one of the three churches in ancient Vitozza that were dedicated to the saint.
From Estate to Parish
The Orsini counts turned the area of San Quirico into an estate with several farmsteads. The estate included a tower, initially used for defence and surveillance. It was later converted into an agricultural facility. Alongside the traces of the cave settlement, this tells another story of the area: the use of an estate and the changing function of one of its towers.
In the second half of the 17th century, a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist was built in San Quirico. The parish of Santi Quirico e Giulitta was established between 25 July and 24 October 1785; its territory was separated from that of S. Maria dell’Aquila. The chapel and the establishment of the parish thus mark two distinct stages in the religious history of the area: the chapel was built first, followed by the parish’s institutional development.
